Heres something I noticed was interresting, the playstation 3 uses a new type of disc, when will computers?

QUOTE(Playstation 3 at walmart.com)
World's most advanced cell processor with a PowerPC-base core at 3.2 GHz
Unprecedented RSX "Reality Synthesizer" graphic processor running at 550 MHZ
Utilizes Blu-ray Disc (BD-ROM) with maximum storage capacity of 54 GB
256 MB XDR memory and 256 MB GDDR3 memory
Support for up to 7 wireless Bluetooth controllers
Amazing Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound

Does anyone really think that much space is required, or are DVD's space more than enough?

The more space you have the higher definition video you will see. So no....thats not enough space and there never will be.

I really don't see how normal people would need that much space for their files, my whole computer would fit on 1 disc...

Do you think they will make a cheaper mini-version that's half the size and stores a better ammount of memory for the average person?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Golden-Fist on 2006-05-26 at 15:19:53
I think DVDs only have 8GB or something. But this would be helpful and more expansive for certain companies. Like If they started Elder Scrolls 5 right now, they could finish it when Ps3's time was almost up and have a really huge game. Though there is a point where there's too much room, I doubt there's ANYTHING that will reach over 10GB

I just checked my computer, which has a ton of unused junk on it, and it's only 50.1gb...

Looks like if I used about another 8gb then I could fill up 1 disc with my whole computer,
how is any average person gonna fill it all up without storing their whole computer on it?

Blu-ray is insanity due to the incompatibilities with almost every HD monitor sold.

Think you're covered because you have DVI in? Think again. You also generally need a certain Intel chipset (there was an article on this a while ago).

All hail Microsoft while they stick with DVD9 format.

This looks like another Beta Max Situation. It may be better technology but its almost too good the requirements are too much its too expensive and not many things are compatible with them. Good Luck SONY

They say this is better than HD and DVD quality, smoother sound and picture quality. I hear it is all the worth the bunch of money for a Blue Ray player! WHenever they come out 800 dollars!

Well, maybe you will be able to carry you computer around on a disc one day. Think about it. Accessing your computer from one of those internet sites like gotomypc.com would be completely useless. You could just update your disc and put it in your laptop and carry that around. Of course, getting to that point would take years and years, but it will be pretty amazing.

Its not for files. Its for videos or video games. Quality starts to fade with bigger screen televisions anyway.

I dont see that happening for a loooong time. There are major differences between hardware and other stuff.

maybe ps3 will try and copy 360 more and switch back to hd dvds

I doubt it. Sony is trying to use PS3 as a blu-ray player, not just a video game console. They are trying to get a head start in the technology.

the more space they have, all the better. you know. future videos might run at like 1024 mb/s thats 1 gb per second. and think of it as a 2 hour movie.

1024 mb x 7200 = teh size of the movie in teh future. it would be spectacular quality biggrin.gif

so yeah. they need to keep coming up with alot of disks. and mind you. future computer might have things like AIS, better OS, and set of blue prints just in one CD, or a CD could carry a database of star charts in detail.

current Xbox Halo 3 is estimated to run at about 9000 kb/s. 54 gb in a disk aint much. with that kind of quality, a minute can turn into 100mb. an hour could turn into like 40~50 gb. and second hour would far exceed those spaces. and -_- my computer has 149 gb, and i used 104of it.

more and more. they need to come up with a harddrive thats in the terrabytes -_-
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Demaris on 2006-05-28 at 05:00:00

They have a terabyte harddrive, only it's not available to the public, for more reasons than just it's a prototype.

I think that at a certain point, developers need to focus less on graphics and more on CONTENT. The human eye can only percieve so much.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lithium on 2006-05-28 at 08:21:15
but then again, Awesome Content + Awesome Graphics = Supah Awesomez0r = Flawless stuff. Besides. i'll probably want something that big. you know. i'll download all educational videos and texts. biggrin.gif Porns and movies! besides. these require high definition for better stuff.

sometimes i wish that I had a cellphone which had 32 terabyte memories with superfast stuff.

My Dream Cellphone <_<

1Hz ~ 2400 GHz Frequency Rate ( Auto Controlled )
32 TB Integrated Storage
8 GB Movable Memory
12 GHz Processing Rate
512 MB Video Processor
128 Megapixel Camera + Atleast 4 Megapixel VidCam
Internet Access + The Ability to Connect to a minikeyboard and mini touch screen monitor. <_<
Movable extra mini harddrive. (32 TB)
^-- All in a miniscular cellphone.

What makes you think they don't? If devolpers were only intrested in graphics then we'd be playing 2D platformers with really good graphics.

Some LotR Xbox games were awesome. They were long too. Turn based battles. but awesome graphics. Nexus: Jupiter Incident was good, awesome gfx with amazing contents.

I say they need more and more developement in speed and space. Miniscular computers, large ultra computers, and other things. Theres no need to stagnate. We develope to make things better.

Can't really have good 2D graphics, at least compared to 3D. =\

And he's saying LESS on graphics, and MORE on gameplay. Not that they don't focus on gameplay right now, but that they need to more.. -_-

And I agree. There has to be a point where we can't really do anything to improve graphics -_- but not with gameplay.

They are gonna have holographic games in the future happy.gif. As time passes, we develope. Everything has to develope. They are gonna make it so developed so that it will be as real as the real world in the gameplay. <_< That'd be awesome.

i like speculating.

RPGs are more concentrating on content. FPS is concentrated on gameplay and campaigns ( some not ). etc.

Wrong, I saw a commercial for a Dell comp with a terrabyte harddrive.

What are you talking about? It makes no sense to me.

I hope you read the entire thing before you post.

That statement meant that there is no need to limit ourselves in developement.
As some people were saying that "they do not need such things as a disk with 54 GB". Baka. Nonsense.

Well in the next decade or so internet bandwidth will rise to at least the tens of MBs per second, maybe even up to a whopping GB per second (I mean, they already have the technology, but those types of internet are too expensive for the average consumer). Soon you'll be able to download an HD movie in mere minutes. Personally, I think that the faster bandwidth is more exciting than more storage, because I agree that movies will only get so large in size before the human eye can no longer notice differences in the quality. I think that Blu-Ray will be able to hold the maximum quality for any movie in existence, perhaps HD-DVD too. However, they already have prototype disks that can hold in excess of 100 GB of storage. While we're on the subject of new technology, there is a new type of television in the works that combines the insane resolutions of LCD monitors (and the thinness) with the image quality and viewing angle of traditional CRT monitors.

Was it a terabyte hard drive or just a terabyte of hard drive space.

They are indeed making progress towards that. CryEngine 2 is the closest thing that look to reality for now. But we're only starting to recreate physics instead of just mimic it.

I'm pretty sure I saw a 1 terabyte external hard drive, but I believe it might have been just two 500 gigabte 7200RPM in one. It's cost was over 500 dollars though, so whatever ;\

And there has to be a point where we can't get any better, graphics wise. At least that's my opinion.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RedNara on 2006-05-29 at 14:31:42
That amount of space will not be needed unless you want HD resolution. Like 1080p... But for normal stuff even for games you wont need it...
