Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Pledge of Allegiance
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Falcon_A on 2006-05-28 at 22:45:42
Now, I know this might not belong in -serious-, but feel free to move to light discussion if the mods deem it be.

Anyway, to the topic.

I was gonna make this a poll, but since everyone's answer could be different, I figured I wouldn't limit it.

Whenever the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, what do you do, and what do you believe people should do, and should it be mandatory?

ie, Do you stand? Do you put your hand over your heart? Do you recite it along with the speaker? etc.

Do you turn around and spit on the floor while they talk?

Do you think it should be forced? Do your personal beliefs have any opinion on the Pledge at all?

Just curious.

At school, this is what we do.

We are told to stand up.
We say the United States Pledge
We say the Texas pledge
We have a moment of silence for one minute.

And incase you're wondering, here's our Texas Pledge:
QUOTE
Honor the Texas Flag,
I pledge alliegance to thee,
Texas, One, and Indivisible

Must say it's retarded

It's not optional?

In my school, about half the class stands, some put their hands over their hearts, no one says it, (sometimes the teacher will, but only if it's a sub), and the PA says it, and there ya go, we all sit down, assuming we stood in the first place.

I usually stand, put my hand over my heart.

Unless I'm doing math homework for my next period class.

I think it's sorta lost its 'meaning' if you know what I mean. No one really cares.

And your Texas pledge is...pure gold...

I think it's a fine example of something that's inherently useless. By state law I can't be forced to say it, it but my teachers in both of my morning classes (we have alternate day block schedules) make us at least stand.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2006-05-29 at 01:00:19
For our school, somebody on the school speakers will tell us to rise and then will begin saying the pledges and basically we just say it along with him or her. This is good for those people who don't feel like saying it because with someone already saying it through our school's loudspeakers, you can't tell whose actually saying it and who isn't in your classroom wink.gif

Stupidest song ever. My teacher tries to force us to do it and punishes people if he isn't busy and he notices. It might also be against some people's religion or something.

I think America is going downhill, why are you forcing me to lie now too? One reason I think America is going downhill is things like the pledge; it goes against 'freedom of speech' and all that. And all because you want people to praise you :/

I don't think it should be forced.

But I do enjoy saying it, i just wish people wouldn't massacre it.
In my school its cool to not stand up and say it, becuase if you do O M G they bombard you with "why are you saying it? are you a republican?"
And those same people don't even know what a republican is, they are just brain washed by their parents/teachers to believe they are bad.

At least here there are people who are intelligent

Every school should do it the way mind does; have a person on the loudspeaker say it and lead everyone else. That way ppl don't get yelled at for saying or not saying it because you can't really tell.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2006-05-29 at 16:18:08
It sounds a bit old-fashioned to me. Surely people should be able to choose not to say the pledge without being told off or frowned upon?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Centreri on 2006-05-29 at 16:20:28
Exactly. Doesn't it, a bit, kinda, go against the constitution and all that anyway? And then America claims that it's all fine and dandy, all is as it should be.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by dumbducky on 2006-05-29 at 16:27:27
Nobody is forcing you to say it, Centreri. It's a symbol of patriotism, that's why you get frowned upon for not saying it. Your basically saying "I hate the USA" like Toothfairy.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2006-05-29 at 16:31:53
Not necessarily. It might just be a silent protest against the recent actions of the US.

I don't sing during hymns at school because I simply don't believe in what I'd be singing about. In fact, I bet most people don't believe in it, but feel like they have to sing because 'everyone else' is doing it, otherwise known as the sheep effect.

I don't hate America, but I don't stand/say the pledge in school. We say it 2nd how, this chick comes on the loudspeaker and tells everyone to rise.

I just sit there and I also got a buddy to stop standing too. Everyone else just stands. Most people don't say it with the chick, and most people don't put their hand over their heart.

I do, however, think it's wrong that they say "Under God" in the pledge. Until their is undeniable proof that there is a God, and until there is undeniable proof that the United States of America is in fact Under God, then I'll start saying it. Until then, it's bogus.

In our school, people stand, put their hand over their heart and recite the pledge along with the voice on the loudspeaker.

However I do nothing because a) I'm not a U.S. citizen, and b) I don't believe in mindlessly pledging allegiance to a cause I don't believe in.

That's the quote that applies here, ducky. They FORCE us to say the pledge when they can. I don't think the USA is worse then most countries, but I'm not patriotic, so why force me to say it?

Exact thing as what CaptainWill said. I don't think America is the 'greatest country' which is watched over by god most of all. So why lie?

EDIT: And same as voyager as well. Who really believes in that? I am a U.S. citizen, but I don't really want that to restrict my rights, such as 'the right to remain silent' tongue.gif. On a more humorous note, why do criminals get a right a student is denied?

I don't believe in monothiesm so I sit down and don't say it. I'm probably the only one in my class that doesn't say it for a reason like that. But most of our class just sits down, unless there is a sub. I had an argument with a teacher last year about it(and I won it XD), but my homeroom teacher this year doesn't care.

The first Ammendment says that congress cannot make a law against your freedom of speech. The teacher is following no law created by congress, just her own rule.

You said you don't believe America is the greatest country, but I do. So how I am telling lie? It is an opinion.

When you have to say the pledge and don't want to, just mouth it. At least it'll make your teachers happy and get em off your tail. And if you are forced to stand, just stand because you need to stretch, not because you want to be respectful of your country.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Noober on 2006-05-29 at 19:00:24
I think it's just a waste of time, especially when you have a lot of homework due next period. But, I do stand, then sit a few seconds before it's over and continue doing HW.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Centreri on 2006-05-29 at 19:04:03
Ducky, then what gives teachers the right to force us to be silent?

And I meant why should I lie. I don't care if you lie or not; I care if I am forced to lie in a country which claims that there is complete 'Freedom of Speech' and the like?

I don't usually stretch at the same time as when the pledge is spoken. I'm a bit rebellious and don't really want to seem to be patriotic either, stupid as that is (I know it's stupid tongue.gif).

I stand and put my hand over my heart. I take off my hat if I am wearing one. Also, I say the full pledge in the correct method.

The fact that they are your elder/superior in the classroom. They can give you detention/OSS/ISS/something else.

I dont really believe in God so I normally just skip the part of "Under God" because I don tthink thats hpw it should be said!
