Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> Your Choice

In life, we must make choices. They either have great or horrible conclusions. However, we do run across situations where both choices are not what you desire.

Situation
You are walking back to your car as you leave the grocery store. You see a note taped to your windshield. This is what it says:
To anybody who cares,
I have in my custody a young woman who has three children and whose husband has died. In another house, I have an elderly woman who has donated thousands of dollars of charity to the poor, homeless, starving, and sick people. If you choose to save the young woman, the old lady dies and vice versa. If you call the police or ignore this note, they both die and I will guarantee that you will spend your lifetime in prison. The choice is yours.

What is your decision, save the young or old lady?

Rules
-You must tell your choice and explain why you made that choice.
-Create a new scenario.
-If the choice of ignoring the situation is not present, you may not say you would choose neither and walk away.
-Don't make stupid scenarios like, "What character would you delete on WoW? A priest or a druid?"

Yes, this is like "This or That", but it's more of scenario than a spontaneous decision.

The young woman. She has three young'uns to care for, so, in reality, three may die if she does too. The elderly lady probably has in her will to donate all of her money to chairties anyway, and she has lived a long life.

Situation:
The runaway trolley car is hurtling down a track where it will kill five people. You are standing on a bridge above the track and, aware of the imminent disaster, you decide to jump on the track to block the trolley car. Although you will die, the five people will be saved.

Just before your leap, you realise that you are too light to stop the trolley. Next to you, a fat man is standing on the very edge of the bridge. He would certainly block the trolley, although he would undoubtedly die from the impact. A small nudge and he would fall right onto the track below. No one would ever know. Should you push him?

What if there was another person with you that would see if you did it?

My consience wouldn't allow me to kill someone like that, so I'd have to let the trolley continue going.

Situation:

You are a fighter pilot on an offensive strike against an enemy. The target is a nuclear weapons silo, with 10 armed nuclear missiles inside. The enemy is planning to use these weapons to target a major city in your homeland. If you target the silo, it will be destroyed, preventing the attack.

However, before you drop the bomb, you realize that there are civillian buildings near the silo, including a kindergarten school. If you destroy the silo, the school is far enough away to survive the blast, but everyone inside will certainly suffer a painful and horrible death from the resulting radiation poisioning.

Before you can make your decision, you notice several enemy fighters closing in behind you. There is not enough time for a second pass, you have only seconds to make your choice:

Destroy the silos and doom the children in the school, or abandon the mission?

The children are our futures, and they will lead the world one day. i would abandon the mission until a chance to complete it without the loss of the school children.

Situation
-----------------
You are the best doctor in the country, and you are called in to an emergency at the hospital. There is an epidemic, with 20 people sick and they will die if not treated by your skill. But as you get into work, a rich man who donates millions to charities worldwide monthly comes in on a stretcher wth a serious condition, and if he is not treated, he will die. You only have time to treat either the epidemic, or the Billionaire.

Who will you choose? The man who has made many children healthy, and gave m,any people homes, or 20 people with the epidemic. Quality versus quantity. Which?

I would save the 20 people. The more lives we save, the more people we have. Although we could save kids, we already got alot of people donating. Sorry rich guy, hopefully the guy who inherits your money gives it to the kids.

SITUATION
-------------

You are in the war in Iraq. You see an iraqi holding an american soldier hostage. Before you rescue him, you see an iraqi baby with a mom about to be killed by an american soldier. Do you:
A) Save the soldier.
or
B) Stop the soldier from killing the mom and baby.
