                    Concept

The idea behind this game is similar to that of {SM}Sir-Shadow's map, The Thing; one player is a predator, slowly picking off the other players one at a time. In this map, I'll be taking this simple premise, expanding it and inserting it into the Aliens universe, where I think it fits very well. A basic game will have a group of human marines trying to accomplish a set of objectives with an alien player trying to stop them at every opportunity. The main thing I'm trying to accomplish is that each game played on the map will vary. I'll be trying to accomplish this by randomizing objectives, item spawns, and just about everything else that comes to my mind.

                    Gameplay

Gameplay will vary depending on wether you're playing as one of the four marines or as the alien.

            Marines
The humans will be given a set of randomized objectives that they'll need to complete within a set amount of time. Marines will have an inventory system that will allow them to easily trade items with other human players. The inventory will be represented by a shuttle in the bottom right. To open doors and pick up new items players will drop the vulture labeled 'Operate/Take.' Players will also start with a med pack, that when dropped will restore your health. The marines start out with a motion tracker as well, which eats your battery (gas) but can be toggled on and off when dropped from your shuttle. Next to the shuttle, marines have a siege tank, which if in  sieged or unsieged position determines whether you will use or drop the item from your shuttle. When the tank is unseiged and you drop an item from your shuttle you will use it, but when it's in the sieged position you will drop it, allowing other players to pick it up for their own use. This works well if your buddy's running low on health and you have an extra med pack.

            Xenomorph
The alien player will start his life in the hive, bursting from his host. From there the alien will use his abilities to hunt down and kill the last remaining marines. The alien, instead of having an inventory, will have a set of abilities which will evolve over time. The alien can use his abilities by dropping them from a shuttle in the bottom right if he has enough power (gas) to use the selected ability. When human players get closer, the alien's minerals will count down from ten. This can be used to his advantage if he plans on hiding from or attacking the marines. Finally, given certain conditions the alien player will evolve from a Warrior, to a Praetorian, and finally to a Queen. With evolution the number of abilities available to the player will increase.

                    Screenshots

The terrain pieces shown in these screenshots are not all final.

                    Notes

Progress is moving slowly but steadily. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Kenoli. If he hadn't helped me do a lot of the more complicated triggers I probably wouldn't have even started working on this map again. Also, if you're curious about this map feel free to check out any of my other maps in the DLDB and in the reviews section. You can also download my unfinished Aliens map in the Terrain Hall of Fame, which shares a few pieces of terrain with this map.

Xeno is the hottest thing on earth, and so is this map. I'm a tester right?

pinch.gif Was hoping you'd make an RPG, and not "The Thing" type map.

Well, it'll have RPG elements in its objectives, but just not actual leveling up.

I enjoyed this map thoroughly once I found out it wasn't an RPG (personal preference). It's a very well put together map with many features that add to the anxiety of being attacked by aliens. GO PLAY IT NAO!

It's totally different than "the Thing" as we all know who the alien is in this. It's a survival type game.

Yeah, I supposed survival describes it a little better.

This map is incredible. There's a real sense of tension... walking down the hallways, suddenly you can't find your teammate! I think he went down the left hallway... then suddenly, the Xenomorph pops out of the grate and ambushes you!

The Motion Tracker for Humans is innovative and really useful. It's even more fun to play as the Xenomorph and try to ambush Humans when they're alone.

I can't wait to see this map finished.

Anyone can be a tester. Just be in Op SEN, that's where I'll be.

The novelty of me being a tester is lost. I am so lonely now.

Fine, no one but Golden can be a tester.
Except not really.

I added a few more screenshots to even it up, if anyone's interested.

Bastard.

They don't want Screenshots they want to see "Tester: Golden-Fist (The sexiest man alive". I know I would.
Ugh can you directly link your images instead of the page with your image on ImageShack. Because it takes so long to load, and a pop up shows up.

Atmosphere = Very..Chilling. Especially with what happens with what Voyager said. Or when your team mate leaves and the Xenomorph burrowed right in front of you.

If anyone wants to demo the map come to Op SEN tonight around 8 PM. I'm going to try to get some full house gameplay in.

Well, since you told me to leave some feedback or soemthan I will: This map is crappy right now, you need to put soem work into it and have more than 1 door open for you. Maybe some items laying around, ya know?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Xeno on 2006-06-04 at 14:19:38
I assure you, don. I'm working on it.
Just for you.

In any case, I'm trying to get some evolution triggers done and I'm planning out some mission scenarios now.

This map sounds unique and interesting. The screenshots showed zerg buildings which kind of fit in with the theme.

I just finished some more triggers last night. Everything's coming along well so far.

Awesome, I helped test the map last Map Night.

I've found something slightly amiss, however. When there's interludes of low volume in the overlaid music, you can still faintly hear the standard music. Maybe boost the volume a bit?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Xeno on 2006-06-05 at 21:02:12
I'm not sure what you mean by that. The ambient sound always sounded alright to me, at least when there was no lag.

So can the alien eat motion trackers yet?
