Hi, this may come off as a pitiful plee for help.

Basically, I have having trouble with grpwire.grp for some reason. It's the one with the unit wireframes when selected in groups, blah blah blah you all know that. Basically I changed the one for the dark templar (hero) unit; ID 74, but though the colours are right, the palette indexes are wrong, so ingame it doesn't work as a wireframe graphic should. It's static, when it should be changing according to the unit's damage, etc.

Now, I'm saying all that, but I KNOW what's wrong (the palette indexes), and how to fix it, but every single time I try, something goes wrong. Either RetroGRP crashes on me when I try to compile the grp, or when I get RetroGRP to actually recompile, it so happens that the palette indexes reverted to the wrong ones again. Suffice it to say it's a good thing I use a good shampoo because I have been pulling my hair out, this is so enraging.

And so if someone could take the attached grp, and fix the palette indexes on the dark templar (hero)'s replaced wireframe (it should be number 074, counting up from zero), and hand me back the compiled grp, I would be very grateful.

I'm not offering anything but the warm fuzzy feeling you'll get from helping out. Please, someone do this for me so I can get on with the rest of the stuff I want to work on here.

I've attached the grp in question - grpwire.grp - to this post.

Yeah, you see my problems aren't so much with that. It's that when I save with Paint Shop Pro with the correct palette indexes, RetroGRP crashes when it tries to compile. If I save with MS Paint, RetroGRP compiles fine, but when you save with MS Paint the palette indexes go back wrong because there are duplicate colours in Starcraft's palette. Problems like this make me have to put down my work for a while and take a breather, sometimes for several days, as to avoid going totally insane. Not good for productivity you see.

hmmm... As far As i know about PS, sometime that would might save as dfferent compress file in comparison with other bmp

then RetroGRP would might be crashed or don't compile grp as collectly

so i just save file with other tools except for MS Paint when i see same like that response but sometimes, GRP-editor of SD-SE just make that without resave from by other tools in my experience.... that's ironical

try GIMP or Photoshop.

Photoshop has the same problem, I'd know since I was recently working on a icon and it made it a in-compatible 16 bit file pinch.gif

Okay... I tried GIMP. I fixed all of the colours so that they have the right palette index to work in game. I saved it, and ooh, I tell you, I was feeling really good! ... and then, RetroGRP wouldn't compile it back to GRP. Just plain crashed on me. This really isn't helping to absolve my sworn vendetta against RetroGRP...

Does anyone have any tips on how to save a BMP using GIMP that won't crash RetroGRP?

EDIT: Tried saving both with and without RLE compression... RetroGRP still crashed on both instances.

EDIT: Okay... I think I'm getting it to work with the Stardraft GRP Editor, but I still want to know if anyone's gotten this to work with RetroGRP, so please read on.

Well, let me take you through everything I did.
1. Decompiled grpwire.grp using RetroGRP
2. Opened up grpwire074.bmp in GIMP, and replaced the colours that were wrong with the correct ones, according to the palette.
3. Saved grpwire074.bmp (tried with and without RLE compression)
4. attempted to compile grpwire.grp with RetroGRP again, but here it just crashes, without an error message or anything. It actually shows the little dialog where Elmo is supposed to 'build' (you know, that dumb 'working...' animated dialog), showed that for a split second and then the program just exits. This is why I think it crashed when it got to grpwire074.bmp.

so answer is....

"bug of RetroGRP"

As far as i know from my experience of RetroGRP
that is not unsuitable for compile from great numbers of frames

My opinnion is predicated on my experience of creat GRP for my Threekingdoms mod
As u know, there are used great numbers of frames
however.... use Retro or not... The choice rests just with you interested.gif

Sigh, well, I got it to work properly using StarDraft's GRP Editor.

I really can't understand why RetroGRP is still out there and the only stand-alone GRP editor. The more I get to know it, the more I intensify my undeniable hatred towards that program.

In conclusion, thanks for the helpful tips, and I sure hope there will be another GRP editor for Starcraft sometime in the near future.

hmmm .... btw i can't understand why many pplz dislike that

basically GRP-editor of SD and Retro
There is no great difference of inconvenience if you really think about it
offcause Retro might be nice if compile from just single image and frame
but if make animated grp or great numbers of frames then both are same
inconvenience

and there is some knack to improve workflow if really think about workflow more deatils
