How do you get your computer to work as a server that files can be accessed from the internet?

You don't need any of that. Almost all computers have a built-in way of setting one up. It would depend on your OS so I can't help until you tell me that.

In all cases, it would be best to have a static-like IP or a domain that redirects to your IP that is constantly being updated with the most recent one. That way, you can easily check stuff without memorizing all those numbers.

Unfortunately, most services like that cost per month. Also, I would not reccommend running a server off windows.

Basically the idea is, many people have their IP addresses constantly changing, so they have some program that continously tells another service your IP address, so they can have a domain name redirect to your current IP.

I have Window's XP. This is mostly for novelty, as I don't really plan on taking this too far, but it'd nice to not have to upload THEN have people download big files such as video.

dyndns and no-ip do the same thing. They are also both free
