Staredit Network -> Portal News -> SEN June 2006 Map Contest
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2006-06-18 at 12:22:03
Another month is passing, and so must another contest. The idea is to set a common theme and a bunch of rules and judging criteria tailored to it. The winner is the one who makes the best map featuring the theme. Now, I'm not asking for anything big or extravagent, because you'll only have about a week to make your map. Maps will be judged by me or anyone I deem fit to judge the maps.

June's Theme: Super Powers
Yeah, time for some unnatural abilities. Perhaps you've got X-Men style mutants running around fighting crime, or maybe some dudes with super powers committing crimes. Villians, superheroes, battles and wars. Be creative, show me the POWAH!

Guidelines
» Must be an original map not made prior to the contest. Steal a map or send in an old one and I'll eat your children.
» No map dimensions larger than 128x128.
» No map over 400kb.
» Any number of players acceptable.
» No team projects.
» No modded maps (SCMLoader, etc).
» You may submit up to three entries, but only the highest scoring entry will be placed and recieve a prize.
» No entry fees.
» Feel free to protect your map. The playing end will be emphasized more than the creation end. 95% of the maps are never opened in an editor.

Maps are no longer being accepted, the deadline has passed.

Judging Criteria
Theme (10) - Obviously this one is important. If the map isn't even remotely related to the theme, it won't score very well. A map scoring 0 on this won't be graded further, regardless of how well it fits. Something that looks premade and just custom fit with a few text messages won't score very well.

Fun (25) - Important for me as I'm playing the map. Am I running around having a good time, or watching a unit talk to itself in a movie? Are there huge bugs that prevent play of the maps? If I ever go to this map again, is it going to be to play it with friends or to delete the scm/scx? This is usually the deciding factor in contest entries.

Aesthetics and Professionalism (15) - Did you use one type of terrain tile and no text color? Are there mispellings distracting me at every turn with some poorly made triggers? Hopefully you can create something that looks and feels decent. I'm not asking for extensive extended terrain or hundreds of sprites, a map that seems well-made should score well. On the subject of professionalism, please PLAYTEST your maps before submission. Nothing looks dumber than a map that obviously hasn't been tested.

Prizes
Yeah, you thought I'd just make you do this for fun? Prestiege? Honor? HAH!

First place: 600 minerals
Second place: 300 minerals
Third place: 150 minerals
First, Second, and Third place entries all go into the Map Spotlight on the front page.
Noteworthy Mention*: 75 minerals
*to be given at my discretion. Nobody has to win these.

Everyone must know that the original contest was about Dreams, in fact several people had already read that post and begun thinking about maps before Moose cruelly went back on his work and changed the contest idea at the last moment. He deleted his post to destroy all the evidence and laughed manically upon doing so. He is evil!

Wtf, I already had a dreams one planned.

Changing it was a heck of a lot LESS evil than actually making us use the dreams theme, if you ask me.

I'll hedge my bets and create a superhero with the power to dream. sly.gif

There was a dream theme first?

Oh well, can't dwell on the past... have to start planning on the future!

If you really want to stick with the dreaming theme, I suppose you could have the super-hero sleeping tongue.gif

I personally think this one is better, though. Dreams theme would not incorporate the theme into the map, but simply make cheesy and useless references to it. The map's gameplay would not NEED a "dream theme," but simply add a reference to it post-production. Here, it makes the makers follow the theme of super-strong individuals, which actually affects gameplay.

I thought dream would've been better since it's a harder subject to make a map on over superpowers. It requires deeping when you try to brainstorm a good map idea. The ability to do this is what makes a map maker a true map maker.

Yea but i was thinking about Nightmare defense where you keep nightmares out of Bobs head....would of been extremly beast.

I agree. So change it back to dreams? I had a really good one for dreams, but I can't think of one as good for super powers... sad.gif

ah thats why my post was deleted. I was like whaa?? I didn't flamme!
I had an idea for a superhero game but like most of my other maps, they got "canceled" I guess I can restart. Don't worry, I'll start from scratch.

If I don't finish my map this time... Someone smack me.

Whats up with the map dimension limit?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by fritfrat(U) on 2006-06-19 at 11:33:26
The map dimension limit has always been there.. maybe it's just one extra step to stop old, bigger projects from being modified to the theme. That's my guess.

Even though it would have been a greater challenge to do a map for dreams, the maps in general wouldn't have been focused around the theme, but simply incorporating it.. I admit, this theme isn't that great either, but it atleast gives direction.

Cool super power theme.

Well guess i better make a map LOTRISH style and you start off with random heros or bleh.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by dumbducky on 2006-06-19 at 18:03:43
It has to be about super powers though, not heroes.

I had a really good idea, but I'm to lazy to figure out how to do all the triggers for it. Oh well, it's all I got.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by JordanN_3335 on 2006-06-19 at 18:07:26
Well then I'll make a custom like super power cool1.gif

I have yet to think of a good idea that isn't too "stupid"... so I guess I can't enter sad.gif.

Damn, I wish I was still into making maps. Ah well, I guess one of these days I will pick it up again.

Good luck to the people that are going to go for the win!

So how long is it untill the maps are due....
Would a map with a bunch of super hero names work?
