Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> FPS and Loading times problem in World of Warcraft
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chronophobia on 2006-06-20 at 19:23:43
Okay, this is kinda wierd, I have a pretty average computer by my means, I play World of Warcraft and I have both pretty slow loading time and average FPS rating, it's on like average 15 FPS, max like 30 (very rare) and lowest I won't mention. The average player has like 50 FPS, and if I stare into the wall in first person with all video setting at the lowest setting and hide my UI I can't even have over 30. It feels like my computer is missing something, but I still can't find what my computer really needs to get higher FPS and loading times. So now I am asking you what I could need.
These are World of Warcrafts minimum system requirements for a Windows System.

* Windows Me/2000/XP (32-bit version only)
* 800 Mhz or higher CPU.
* 512 Megabytes or more of RAM.
* 32MB 3D Graphics card with Hardware Transform/Lighting (such as a GeForce 2 or better).
* DirectX® 9.0c or above.

This is my computer:

* Windows XP Home Edition
* 2.60 GHz CPU
* 1024 Mb RAM
* GeCube Radeon 9250 (Omega 2.6.87) 128 Mb (ATI Radeon 9000 series is supported by the game, you can see it here at this link.
* DirectX 9.0c

So now I am asking you, what could possibly be wrong with my computer or the game? Because nothing seems to be wrong, seriously.

Regards.

I'm no hardware wiz, but I'm thinking your graphics card is not powerful enough for the game, thus lagging. Check http://newegg.com for a videocard + Power supply for it if it is indeed the problem. This is just a guess.

But I mean, the requirements is 36Mb, I have 128Mb with all that settings needed.

Maybe it's the RAM. The absolute minimum for it to play is 512, maybe 1024 is still too low?

Turn down the settings and use try ReForce?

I don't know how WoW works in terms of settings but ReForce locks your refresh rate.

I play WoW on 3 different computers:

2.98Ghz, 2GB RAM, 256MB Video - Desktop
Runs at around 120FPS at highest settings

Dual 1.66Ghz (3.22Ghz total), 1GB RAM, 128M Video - Laptop
Only tested at around 30% of settings, runs at 120FPS

1.6Ghz, 384MB RAM, 256MB Video - Desktop
Used to run at around 70FPS at around 5% settings back when it had 128MB Video, now it runs at like 30FPS because the Video Card is using way too much RAM.

Your computer should be running at full settings without any problems, also, the system requirements are a bit lower than you've posted, whivh are the recommended. Minimun specs are 256MB RAM, 600Mhz, but that's just pushing it to not being able to play at all.

Alright, now that you know a rough estmate of what your computer should be running at, let's look at some common problems.

When you log on, you'll get to your character screen and you can get to the Mods selection screen from there. At the top right there is a small box with a number in it, I set it to 64, 72 is also good.

Using 30 Mods for WoW is a lot, I'd recomend removing a few of them. When I'm going for utmost performance, I don't have more than 12 mods running, Usually I'll have ike 20.

Chances are you haven't played around with excess programs and services in Windows XP. Those might be sucking up enough RAM to slow down performance.

My comp is 1.8GHz, 512+256MB RAM, stock video card, and I run just fine. I think you've got major, major spyware/virus issues.

What Moose and Lurker have said also apply, I omitted them from my post thinking that you've already tried them.

What I do on my PC with the least power is ctrl+alt+del and close pretty much any process under my user name that isn't vital to my machine.

Spiware and Viruses aren't really a bi issue concerning performance to WoW, if this is the issue, you should be experiencing lag pretty much everywhere, but it never hurts to check.

I've checked my taskmanager and googled all my tasks that are on it, I found five programs that are or could possible be trojans/viruses in my computer. Though when I try to disable them, my computer says that they are a critical systemprocess and can't be disabled, anyhow, does anyone know how to get rid of these programs?

Isass.exe
Services.exe
Winlogon.exe
Csrss.exe
Smss.exe

And currently I am searching trough my whole computer with Panda Antivirus Platinum, currently I have no viruses/trojans on my computer, but aye, I am on 60% so I hope they will find some sort of solution for this problem.

ADDITION:
Now I've checked my computer for viruses completely, and it still says that my computer doesn't have any viruses or programs that could damage my computer.

they are critical system processes smile.gif

Do you have anty FSAA (anti aliasing)? In game or driver settings? That might give you a huge slowdown smile.gif

I ran WoW FINE with fsaa and max-ish settings on
athlon64 3k+
2x512ram
Radeon 9600xt 256mb
nothing overclocked.

Oh, did you overclock anything? Perhaps WoW is sensitive to that?

Also I wouldn't stop until I get maximum fps. ie 85fps for my monitor(STABLE).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chronophobia on 2006-06-21 at 06:14:08
Nope, I do not use Anti Aliasing (I think). And I have not overclocked my computer either.

But when I googled those files there was this advertisement about a program called WinTask Pro. It maximizes performance, remove unnecessary programs and boost your computer. I got kinda interested in this kinda program, because I am not a computer God so I can't manually sort out which files are bad and not. So, is there a freeware of this program or a similiar that could do the same tasks as this program?

I have a bad computer too...Just get a new video card, sound card, and a processor.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-06-21 at 07:15:35
Sound card wouldn't change anything.

You should probably be able to play it.. is this the only game that experiences stuff like this? Maybe you should try reinstalling or closing background programs.

No, this is not the only program that I'm having FPS issues with, but it's the only 3d game that I am playing currently. I also played Age of Empires 3 but I got bothered because there was this lag.

And Tizzle, that isn't the problem, my computer are alot better than the average requirement for the game, and I still have FPS and loading time issues.

Maybe not, but they said on that site that Isass.exe was a source of a virus called Optix.Pro, which confuses me now when you say that. Others that they can be possible sources of viruses/trojans.

How old is the computer? In myt experience, if a computer has had Windows installed on it for a long time without a refortmat, it bogs down due to the crappiness of windows. (I have no evidence to support this, but on my old crappy computer I had been going for 4 years, then I reformatted and it ran about 60% faster.

Do you have hardware accelleration set to max?

Right click on desktop... Properties... settings.. advanced...troubleshoot... and you're there.

Not sure.. maybe disk defragmentation?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chronophobia on 2006-06-21 at 17:37:27
My computer is like 2 years old now, and I've never reformatted it. And yes Deathawk I've tried to do that, it's on max as standard and I've defragmented without any improvements. But, what do I need to reformat it? Do I need a Windows XP CD to install it again? Since I don't think I got one, XP was implemented from the beginning in my computer.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-06-21 at 18:15:41
Yeah, you'd need the Windows XP Cd.. I believe. =\
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2006-06-21 at 18:30:39
You usually get an OS cd even if the OS is installed already.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chronophobia on 2006-06-21 at 18:56:24
Could that actually be the backup disc?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-06-21 at 22:53:00
Put it in your drive and check.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2006-06-22 at 01:08:48
The fast way to reformat is to insert the OS disk and point it at the drive anyway.
