Im wondering whats the smallest possible map size that could be made. I think I read on the random mapmaking tips that a screen size is 20x12 squares. I tried something quick on Starforge (I have little experience with that) by making a map of that size, but it kept crashing on me.
I thought it would be an nice map to make for a few friends where you dont even have to move the screen around, so Id like to know how to go about that.
Thanks.
The smallest map possible is 64x64. A non-stantard map size corrupts the scenario file.
Non custom map sizes will crash if it is the first game you have played during your starcraft session.
Try playing a differant map before testing.

Theres a map called Spider Mine D. I think its 20x192 or something. Screen movement is restricted to up/down, no left/right.
You think it is, but what is it really? Can you post the map?
Attached.
And many thanks, Bolt! It worked!

I was wondering if you were going to read my post or not. lol
Your Welcome.
I've nvr seen a map that small before...
Keep in mind that the bar(Where you see unit portraits and such) at the bottom of your screen takes up space, so the screen size would be restricted even more.
Maps can go to 20x12, and 32x32. I've tested and it works. Theres other combinations too.

Someone made a map smaller than that 20x12. it was 2x10 or something. it was crazy

and it only crashed if its your first game like bolt said
Yeah, I made a 10x10 map once, and it worked. If it is your first game on bnet it would crash thought.
Doing pretty decent progress on my map, which is sorta like a tag with civs and firebats. Theres only gonna be 4 of us, so I used the binary way to randomize 2 switches for four people. Just need to finish the triggers and add some twists to it.
The map Cheeze was talking about is mine, it was a 1x10 (or maybe it was 10x1). I deleted it because it started to crash when I played it, but I think that's because of the reasoning bolt said. DeathKnight2004, among others, can assure you I did in fact make the map. He played it... hopefully he won't try to smite me by saying it never existed.
Any map that is not a normal sized map (64x64, 256x256, 256,128) will crash StarCraft, IF it is the first map you play once you log onto battle.net. As long as you play another map first, this shouldn't happen. Or so I'm told.
I think that maps bigger than 256x256 will crash StarCraft no matter what. Let's hope that memory serves correctly, in this case. Clokr_ will know, at any rate.
I'm not sure

Just test it, its the fastest method for know it.
Too lazy. The few times I have tried it in the past, it crashed. So there's my research.
Maybe it's just me, but I've only been able to get non-standard sized maps to work once on b.net. Every other time, it crashes (and yes, I did play a different map online before testing).

Each square of terrain is stored as a byte of data in the game engine. If you have more than 65532 (256x256) bytes, the game engine can't handle them all and will crash,
Lol, Clokr_ you do know. You just forgot.

Oh yeah, but I wanst really sure. I read somewhere that someone make a 1024x1024 map that worked but I doub it. If the 256+ maps dont work is because of that.
