Staredit Network -> Games -> How Did You Get Into Starcraft Map Making?

I got into Starcraft map making slowly. I wanted to make a perfect melee map but I never did get to. But I would ask about a few little things at a time and eventually my skills got pretty good. Thats how I got into Starcraft Map Making. What about you?

Well after I got my own copy of Starcraft, I played campaign for a bit, went back to the title screen, because i was like "Hey, Im a go Ownzor some N00bies on teh B.net!!!11!1111!1!!" (Well, not exactly like that.) Then I noticed the campaign editor and I went "OMG, i could makes some uberific maps with that and stuff!11!!!" So I used it and kept getting better, and stuff.

I love telling this story. Let's start with how I got onto StarCraft...

As soon as StarCraft came out I got it because the box looked cool. I played the game a few times... exclaimed "THIS SUCKS!" and shelved the game for two years. Sometime later I played the N64 version with a friend and then decided to try the game again. After becoming addicted to Battle.net and getting into the groove of those wonderful "Fastest Possible Map Ever" maps, I decided to make my own. Except tinier! I called it "Tiny Twilight" which is a totally rigged fatest map on 64x64. After I discovered UMS, and wonderful games like Golems and Cat & Mouse, I started making my own versions of those maps because they were rigged. The first thing I did was read the StarEdit help section to learn about triggers. For a long while nothing happened, I daveled in map making a bit, though I really broke through when I discovered the "Move Location" action. Endarire, maker of Space Pirate RPG EE helped me out some. I should name some larva "sperm" in one of my maps in his honor... I seem to remember a time when channel RPG was popular, then Op OpZ(U) or whatever channel they used back then became the new hang out. I've been pretty much annoying map makers there and picking up tricks since then.

The starcraft campaign editor was a new world to explore when starcraft first came out, and I loved to create things.

Thus, I learnt by using. It took me a while because I didnt have any resources to look to.

I must say my map making skill has considerably gone up ever since I made this website.

I'm still telling people this, and they still don't listen. Read the StarEdit help section! It's the major breakthrough between being a map player and begining to learn to create your own maps. Of course after they read that I refer them to this site biggrin.gif *cough*gimmemoney*cough*

Hey... I got into map making by... making a map that took like 6 months to make, worked on it every day, and kept on working on this map, tested it, fixed bugs, and when I was finally done, I tried to keep on working on this to make it better with ADVANCED TRIGGERS *GASP* (still didn't know switches...) and yeah... oh yes... Worked on my first RPG, got x-tra editor like a year ago disgust.gif and uh... yeah... my first RPG was Featherblade RPG... took 1 year to perfect... and also yeah... my first Defense: Banana Defense.

PS... the first map I was talking about, it was about killing my friend's brother...

I was really into DBZ way back when I was younger, so I loved playing those great UMS DBZ RPGs. I wanted to make my own, but I sucked. So I figured out the StarCraft system and have been developing my own style ever since. Of course, I didn't "max out" my trigger knowledge until after I joined BlizzForums, where I met a bunch of cool guys like Omega (now known as Tuxedo-Templar), Bolt, Heimdal, DrunkenWrestler, SaltMan, BSTRhino, and Doom Dragoon. Being in contact with those guys sort of got me to where I am. They were critical and expected a lot from good map-makers, so I guess they helped me learn most of what I know now.

My bro made installation maps of him with mass scouts vs comps with mass vessels, overlords, etc. I tried mapmaking myself, picked up on it easily, and went from there. Had to learn basically everything on my own.

Saw a friend creating melee maps, so I wanted to do that myself. Of coarse I didn't know anything about locations or triggers etc but slwly I've picked up the basics and still learn things until today

Ahh..My story into Map Making...Quickly get some pop-corn boys and girls...ok...you didnt get popcorn...YOU LIL BASTARD I CAN"T WAIT FOREVER GET THE DAMN POP-CORN NOW!!!

mmm..Anyways....

Well...to tell you the truth...it was about 2 years ago...And I was at Wal-mart...and i saw the Game Starcraft....so i decided...why hell..that looks like an awesome game to play...So i stole it...Wal-Mart is easy to steal from you know...

Well...I started playing the campaign missions....and passed a few of them...Then i noticed the "Staredit" thing in the Starcraft directory folder....and i clicked it and it took me to the map editor....and i said...well hell...wtf is all this crap..

I looked through alot of stuff.....with the difficult "Forces" and "Triggers" it was so confusing >_< Then i saw the Tutorials and Help stuff On about Staredit....so i read it...and read it...Back then i didn't know Squat about Switches...or anything at all...So i kept reading...then finally i did the tutorial and well...many of the triggers confused me such as the Move location and Leader board so i left it alone....My very First map I can't remember what i called it...But i was 0wnage back then...i didn'tknow nothing about anything else cept AI Scritps...My first map was about a computer AI on insane and i had to destroy it...a simple single player map...After that I made a map called "The Cocoon" in which the Weird zerg egg was protected by comps with easy and insane AI scripts...and all i had was a small Terran base..You had to kill the cocoon in the given time or it will hatch and an invincable Torrasque will come after me and kill me...Well i couldn't get the timer right so I deleted that map...

I Started fidiling with AI Scrits and found out alot of stuff....Then i got bored of SC and shoved it aside....Then i said..Hell i wanna finish the campaigns....all of them..So i started playing the Campaighns again..Then i finally passed them all....so i shelfed SC for a while....about a year and a half....Then I reinstalled SC cause i noticed my friend was playing it...So then i got Internet...56k Internet...Wasn't fast but it did the job...Then i got onto Battle.net in Feburary 2004...So I have been playing on Battle.net For 6 months...By then when i Reinstalled SC i had forgotten everything i knew about triggering and stuff....

Being on Battle.net..I saw alot of stuff....when i first entered Battle.net it scared me...I didn't know censored.gif ....When i was a Newb to Battle.net I went through Phases

Melee Maps>UMS Maps-Maddness Maps>Cat n Mouse Maps>Hacks>The Thing Maps>Bounds>Map Making>Volcano Escape MAps>Risk Maps-Brood War-World War 2 maps>SEN>Map making

Well...as a Newb i started playing Melee....I would lose alot...get banned..kicked...And then i got better....soon wining alot of melee's and sometimes losing...My First ever Account was Scorpion_10 First server to join was USWest

After a while i noticed that there was a tab on which type of Map you would like to join in the join game tab in Battle.net....I picked UMS...I was like WHAT IN THE HELL IS UMS?!?!?!?!?!

I noticed one map...one game i saw...i think it was "McDonalds Tasty Maddness".That was the first Maddness map i ever saw....i thought it was GREAT!...but then i saw another gAME.....Cat and Mouse??!?!?!?

Cat and Mouse...i joined it and played...and you had to run away from Cats while trying to build a base...I tHought it WAS SOOO FUN!!Then I noticed someone say they went to StarcraftSector.com for awesome hacks....so i went there and Yes...downloaded alot of hacks there...

I used hacks...

I noticed alot of games....and stuff...I could see the whole map...i could do stuff i could never do...

After I got out of the Hacks Phase i notcied....a game called THE THING..I joined it...and when i played.....i nearly pissed my pants...It was Scary...

Then...i saw a game that...well....kinda looked weird...It Said BOUND JOIN NOW!

I said wtf is a bound....so i joined...I can't remember what the bound was...I think it was Champion Bound, Chobo Bound, Cokle bound...Can't remember...

I got so FREAKED out with this map....it was impressive....it looked awesome..

Then i decided...How bout i make a Map?...I Aqquired some Map making Technuiques By myself...and by looking at some maps ^_^

My first Ever map that i made was "The Maze Of Death"

I still have the map....And its not half bad ^_^

Basically...Maze of Death One of my maps in which i was a Newbie...And i had barely Seen a map...With COLORS IN IT....Back then when i saw colors in a map i was like OMFG WOW HOW U DO THAT?!?!?!!?

I Got the color maker thing from SCindex and made colors for my map..Maze of death...it was a 256x256 Map with a Maze like Terrain...It took me about a couple of hours or more(about a day)to make the terrain...

You controlled a Marine...And you had to get to the middle First To win..Simple map...but there were maze monsters and you had to kill them....and the other players were not friendly with you...there were 3 healing stations in which all around the center...if you found one u were lucky ^_^

I Hosted it...And people Started Speading it....it was a fun map...When I started map Making i changed my name from Scorpion_10 to X-Scorpion-X

Then...I didn't know what to do next as a map...Then i noticed a game..Volcano Escape...I played it and OMG THIS IS SO FUN but its so crappy and cheap...

I played the Volcano Redon(8) map..and it was so flucking sweet..But i noticed the map wasn't protected....So i got mad...Since alot of people were making Rip-offs to the origional map and making Volcano Escape 2 and 3 and more and so on....It wads just like the Thing map...it kept going and going..

I decided....why hell I'll look at the triggers for the Volcano map and make my own...but copy the triggers then make a new map...

My Second map Was called "Water Escape"..It was another 256x256(I had alot of free time back then to make really big maps ^_^)and you had to escape the water...just like you had to escape the lava in Volcano Escape...u had to run from the lings...And yes...my map again became popular.....It took me about 2 days to finish it...and about a week to perfect it...

I said to myself...wow what a great map maker i am.....rrrrighht i sucked back then smile.gif

Then came upon me the RISK map....i liked it....not much to say here

I then had an idea...I had recently Downloaded a Program that Extracts sounds from Starcraft (Later leading me to collecting sounds) and i said I'd make another map....My 3rd and last map...Was called "Minefield"....This was a 64x64 map..and this map only took me about 15 hours to finish....i used alotof sounds from SC and made an uber brief that looked like there was shooting in the background....cept the map sucked...all you had to do was get your marine across the minefield....and well the map sucked sooo bad....

After a while I said "Well...screw the Minefield map" i decided to make a bound map....I never finished this map....but i still have it somewhere in my maps folder...

Thats when i decided I'd Join a Clan...The First ever Clan i joined was Clan Kaiser..I was Kaiser_Scorpion...then i left the clan....the clan sucked...I decided To make my Own clan...Clan Scorpion...I had about 10 memebers fast in only 1 day.....But thats when i got Muted.....omg My clan Lost its leader cause i got muted...I was Voided....Oh i forgot....Before i decided to make my 0wn clan and after i quit Kaiser Clan...I joined a new clan....Clan SCR Starcraft Rebels...This was a good clan with a bot in it....and i stayed in it for a month...before i decided to quit it since nobody ever came on and make my 0wn clan...Well when i got voided i asked my friend for another CD key.....and yay I got unmuted ^_^ I found only 1 member of clan Scorpion still in op Scorpion.....he said that i was gone for about 2 weeks....and the clan got even bigger...while i was gone...my Co-Leader Scorpion-jr. Led the clan when i was gone....And he said it stood for only about 10 days before everyody left...So i gave up Clan Scorpion....and Then i played a weird...but fun map

Life of a Civilian...Such a good map...yet you will always get banned since long DL ._. I liked playing these maps and they were fun....Till the Faithful day I joined a life of a civilian Game...and it was me and some dude i forgot the name of...DAMN MY MEMORY!...He asked me if i new what /dnd ment...I said i dunno...He said type in /dnd my name and my pass and i did it ._. and guess what...He hacked my X-Scorpion-X account out of stupidity and curiosity of me....DAMN ME!!

I made my New Account...XX-Scorpion-XX...which i currently have in USWEST...

Then I got Brood war....i started playing alot of maps in BW....and seeing new stuff like more player colors like light blue...peach...Black..etc..

Skipped something...when i made Water Escape..i got Xtra Editor....and when i was making My bound...I noticed Square terrain in many bounds so i dled SCMDraft(which sucked).

I then Downloaded Starforge...And wow did it rock back then...then one day I was looking through a site...and i saw the Sites Affiliates...and I started searching through them...and i found SEN...lovly SEN...I learned so much here//

After downloading alot from SEN and learning more stuff than i knew i decided to make another map...Blitz Ball...Since SEN taught me how to use Move locations....

Blitz Ball took me a while...and i put it aside for a month...then continued it alot more...Till Today i finished it and used it to join (U)....it was an Impressive map happy.gif

Wow...I just told you My whole History Of Battle.net...I didn't actually say about map making....well screw it smile.gif

EDIT:Holy Crap skipped alot...Well...This is only part of my History of Battle.net...

Lol, I doubt thats the truth but it still is a good story even if it isn't:)

I started to actually pay attention to maps after I played/watch a map called "Kill me" By a well known Tuxedo Templar. After I watched it I was like "OMG I wanna make an awesome map like that!". However, many of my attempts were unsuccesful:(, as I did not know how to use the triggers. I searched far and wide, unitl I was introduced to forum websites. I first went to Battleforums(I got to see some of Tuxedo Templars post!), where I learned many of the basics of map making. Than I stumbled upon Blizzforums, where I learned some more things.

However, I still didn't couldn't make a map that could even compete with Tuxedo Templars maps. I didn't know wat 2 do. Than I realized there were links on ppls sigs., and I clicked on a link of a werid guy named "Yoshi da Sniper";) called Staredit, and I found this website:)!

Try SCM draft for stacking minerals.

More info on mina: So anyways, after I started playing on B.Net, I noticed a game called Team Fortress, based off one of my favorite games ever. So I joined it, and well, simply put, it sucked. I never played another one. After that, I really got into cat and mouse games, especially the Cat&Mouse w/Fleas. I was amazed out how the guy made the worker flea (Drone) to appear near the main flea (Ling). I tried everything and couldn't get it to work. Eventually I found an extremely rigged one that someone unprotected, opened it, and found the move location trigger. That changed my whole map making perspective. I was like "OH MY GOD, STANDARD! THE POWER! IF ALL THIS POWER WAS IN MY HANDS *rant* *rant* *rant*" (FF Mixed in Balamb Ref, look it up) or something along that. So i went to work on a Cat and Mouse All Three Races. Well, simply put it sucked. Then I was amazed by Movie Maker maps, and tried that, and again it sucked, I don't think I even got close to finishing it. So One of my friends wanted to show me this one map called the Battle.Net Expirience (If you haven't seen it, I'll submit it or something if its not already there). Man, I couldn't stop laughing from it, so I tried to make my own, and kept getting mixed up because I made create triggers for forces, instead of individual players, so instead of 10 Dragoons appearing, i'd have sixty or so appearing. So I took out my shotgun and put an end to that miserable map. Then I remembered that crappy little TFC map, so I said, I'll make my own. It was really good, I haven't finished it, because when I was making it, I stopped playing SC and got addicted to Halo. Maybe I'll finish it sometime. But you chose from four classes, chose either a vehicle or a weapon, and depending on your class, you got special abilities, like build sentry gun, stab, lay mine, demopack ect. But I've never publicly released a map ever. I've made a few for me to play, and some melee maps for computer owning. So yeah.

Got into mapmaking after the first few UMS maps I played, which was a nice break from melee. No color text, hyper triggers, stacking, map protection, just good ol' StarEdit... New ideas, websites, and interesting stuff being introduced all the time, really active community, games got full fast, everyone was on 56k and AOL, everyone's trying to figure out StarEdit, fighting for channels, Madness maps were IN, Starcraft.org wasn't outdated and full of dust (hehe).

To much memories.. Man, those were the days, StarCraft was so fun back then for me biggrin.gif

It all started when I first came to SEN.. I saw that Yoshi was looking for staff members.. so I quickly made an RPG though it was glitchy a bit... it was still accepted!!

Naw it didn't start there:

It all started when I first came to SEN.. LmAo.. okay.. I got into map making as soon as I played the map "Quest for the Magic Crystals".. was one of the first RPGs I played with a few friends, I got addicted to that rpg and decided to make my own version.. therefore creating "The Rise of Ishan" *btw all earlier versions suck ass compared to my new released version.. I think some of you may have it.. its completely revamped and whatnot..* and started on a series of the RPG with the second "The Return of Ishan" *started but stopped* and "The Revenge of Ishan" *some of you may know of this RPG as I posted about it some time ago, it is also my attempt at making a RANDOM BATTLE RPG with spells and item usage, I've shown only a few people the beta version of it.. such as Moogle and Gunner_4_Ever... IT WAS EXTREMELY BETA wasn't it Mog wink.gif though the random battles worked just fine! HURRAH!!* and then I branched out into making other maps such as "ReCaLL BaLL MadNeSS" yes another map some of you SEN members may recall me posting about.. I worked on it and got every trigger down until I came across this certain trigger error in which I asked DemonicDragon, Moogle, Gunner_4_Ever for help.. though even they were stumped by its odd error.. unless Demonic was TRICKING me!! LoL just kidding Demo.. it had music and seizure inducing abilities!! and then I made "SC Ani-Mayhem" an idea formed by playing SWW's Pixel map *which was awesome and revolutionary* so I decided to base my map off of it except with difficulty settings and what not... it started off swell until I lost interest in SC due to oblivious reasons! and I made a couple of other maps that haven't been out due to my lack of posting and uploading!

Let's see... I first started playing a Volcano Escape map. THe ORIGINAL one. Anyways my friend and I played it so much that we knew all the tricks to beat it so i decided to edit it(This was about 2 months ago). It was alot more fun, just played it with my friends. Then i learnt some triggers in it and so i wanted to make my own maps. At that time I was really addicted to bounds so i made a bound map. In other bounds I saw theses cool trick with the turrets, the invisible tanks etc. So I searched on websites for help on how to make them. I got most of them on this site and on scindex(which brought me to this site). My bond is short and might suck dunno, yeah it was my real from scratch map.

Then my conzins came over my house and saw me when i was playin WarcraftII they showed me Starcraft and said its hellva better then war II. When i played SC i was amazed that it had 3 races and better graphics i was addicted to it. Then i bought it and played it alot then i got bored of it (Note i didn have internet that time). When my cuzin showed me champain editor i thought it was crap. Then i finaly got the brood war when i was 11. Boy did i love lurkers and dark archons. Then i got bored of it. Then it happen i got internet YAy! i played Online with Sc and found theses UMS games amazing huh and people told me how to use campain editor then at the age of 12 i learned how to make UMS Maps. I just love SC smile.gif Thats my Story

Basicaly, my brother got SC, I decided to play it, I played it for a year, when I was 9 I decided "Maybe I should try playing it online, campaign mode is getting stupid and boring", then I was instantly drawn to the UMs, having been curious about what is possible with it, since I couldn't really play Blizzard's UMS maps in singleplayer \=. Every so often I'd try making a map I called "Crystal Castles"(note: I didn't know there was a map by that name at the time, and my version was completely different), it was severely stupid when I did finish it at 12. I started trying to map at 11.
Mainly I just edited maps, and I loved to do that, because I just odn't have the patience to make my own.

It all started back in 2000 when i came home with my copy of sc. I beat the campaign in a few days, so i decided to check out the campaign editor. I read the help file with it and became a newbie mapmaker. I made mostly ums maps cause they were fun and eventually I bought brood war. I was turning out maps like crazy (most sucked), but i was learning. Now i'm doing way better, but i don't make as many maps anymore.
