[sub]I've been watching alot of movies as of late, and I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions for good movies to watch. ( I got Netflix about a month ago, and I'm starting to run out of movies to rent. )

I like alot of cult movies, like Office Space, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and others. I also have been watching alot of 'mobster' movies like GoodFellas and Casino. Im into comedies, not so much into thrillers or action movies, unless they are action comedies. Good old classics like BASEketball suit me well.

So yeah, any good movies?[/sub]

If "Master and Margaret" is translated, I recommend it. (taken from a book that's been written in the 50s - the book is also very good)

Also "No man's land". It's about war in Bosnia, and how the goverment left one guy to die just to maintain it's popularity, and not look so helpless.

It's all a matter of taste...

Fight Club
Momento
Fallen

Those are more serious movies.

An excellent comedy is Baby's Day Out. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Everybody loves Mel Brooks. And when you say "Part II", are you saying you only like the part at the end with "Jews in Space", a "Viking Funeral", and "Hitler on Ice"?

Comedy:
Wayne's World (1 and 2)
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy
Anchorman: Wake Up Ron Burgandy
Rat Race

Horror:
Saw I
Saw II
Misery

Action:
Sin City
V for Vendetta
King Kong

Drama:
The Godfather
Schindler's List
Big Fish

Adventure:
The Lord of the Rings (1, 2, and 3)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Shrek (1 and 2)

Just some I can think of off the top of my head.

If you've got the patience for these, I suggest Pulse (the original by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, not the American remake) and Intacto. Both are wonderful films from a film student's standpoint, but the problem is some people find them to be too slow at times. I recommend them only if you can handle sitting through slow tense plots.

As far as comedies go, Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness is great. Actually the whole Evil Dead series is wonderul, but the third installment is the funniest.

Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is excellent. Again, this is slow, but its still one of the best samurai flicks around.

Spartan is an interesting film starring Val Kilmer. There isn't much dialogue in it, but the main character is very interesting to watch (note this is more of a character study than a plot-driven story).

As far as oldies go, Chinatown, starring Jack Nicholson, is great as well. Its an excellent modern film noir "whodunnit" type of movie. Its a bit dated, but still not bad.

Last, but certainly not least, you should get an anime called Howl's Moving Castle (the dubbed version preferably). Its by the same creator of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, to give you a sense of his work.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Basiclly, I think its funny when people get hurt or die.
(die not in real life)
When people get hurt in real life like when those little babies or kids run then trip over their own feet, NOW THATS FUNNY, and crash fall into the sement, FACEFIRST

This is from the top of my head, just google, 'Movies'
You'll get alot more. Or you can just read a book,

Great movies, as the topic suggests. smile.gif

Basically I'm a total film snob who watches less mainstream films. I love Japanese horror films, though.

I'm noticing alot of very mainstream schlock getting mentioned here. Now, when you say cult movies, do you mean just any old cult movie, or cheap sci-fi movies? I'd suggest just watching the Sci-Fi channel on off-days, they air some fantastic crap.

I've heard a film called Bubba Ho-tep is pretty good.

Yeah, it stars Bruce Campbell (of the Evil Dead series). He's funny in it, and again its supposed to be a horror/comedy about Elvis in an old folks home. I have the DVD, and I think its hilarious at times (if you get Campbell's humor). Its not a great film per se, but it does have its great funny parts.

Office Space was hillarious.
Orange County is comparable to the amount of laughs for a comedy.
Rise of the Phoenix is a good comedy.
For horror, The Hills Have Eyes was an awesome movie.

The original Hills Have Eyes was great, and I'd have to say I really liked the remake as well. However if you've got a weak stomach and can't handle excessive gore, this movie is not for you. Still very disturbing, though. Nice choice.

Wrong Turn is a good horror movie as well.

Try these movies: Kill Bill (maybe both, but definitely volume one), Blade Runner, Dune (both the old movie and the relatively new miniseries), Legend, Munich, Schindler's List, Enemy at the Gates, Serenity, Batman Begins, and I suppose I'll throw the fourth Harry Potter flick out there as well (though that is undeniably mainstream).

I just picked up The Constant Gardener today at Border's, so I'll have to see how that is later.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2006-07-29 at 14:36:32
I don't know if you've seen them, but The Godfather Parts 1&2 are really good.
