nothing changed... how do I play it?

here are some questions about ur work
1. did u save *.dat files by Save as file...menu, or Export to MPQ after save file ?
2. if u did save file correctly,
did u type
arr\ for the directory prompt
when u put modified files into MPQ ?

all I did was make my mod, and save-as to the starcraft folder as "test" which turned out as "test.dat", then opened it using starcraft :/

Read the tutorial at the top of the forum.

I find it's way harder to learn when I just read it, it's way easier when people actually reply n stuff. I'll look at it though.
u sure need to put thoes file into MPQ files and set those modified files path n names collectly
by ur typing According to basis MPQ root in MPQ file
ex: arr\unit.dat
script\iscrpt.bin
unit\terran\marine.grp
All right, let's just explain it directly.
Create a folder called "My Awesome Mod" or something.
Put your files in it. If they're .dats, put them in a subfolder called "arr"; .tbls in "rez", and iscript.bin goes in "scripts".
Use
WinMPQ or--my personal preference--
MPQ Compactor to compress that folder into an MPQ.
Use
MPQDraft to load that file, and play around with your mod!
"unable to perform the patch due to a windows error" when I finally get to start my mod T_T
k nvm... NOW, the units arent changed... o.O!?
...
whats wrong with u. apparently u didn't read the last few comments.
we have stickys for a reason, and dont flame me for pointing out the obvious, i didnt do nofin.
I'll take you through it step by step, seeing as you don't want to read the pinned topic...
1) Make your changes in Datedit. (I assume you've done this)
2) Save your file as units.dat.
3) Open WinMPQ.
4) Create a new MPQ archive. Save it as any name.
5) Find and press the "ADD" button.
6) Select your units.dat file.
7) When the popup comes up, type in arr\. Hit OK.
8) Close WinMPQ (it saves automatically)
9) Open MPQDraft.
10) Select "Load MPQ Patch".
11) Select Starcraft, and Starcraft again. Press Next.
12) Press "Browse for MPQ's" and find your created MPQ file. Check the box. Hit next.
13) Press Finish, and enjoy your mod.
» 12) Press "Browse for MPQ's" and find your created MPQ file. Hit next.
Don't forget to check the checkbox. It took me forever to figure out that was why my mods never did anything.
I already read the tutorial a long time ago, but thats what it says (above)
at least Pie_Sniper understood
SO WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH U PEOPLE!!! I TOLD U I READ IT A LONG TIME AGO
Calm down. They're just trying to help, and the instructions they're giving you are correct.
ok still no changes (Pie_Sniper), and also, when I start I have to alt-tab then go back in the game for the mouse to move (it moves perfectly, so it does work)
If it didn't work and you followed those instructions, you didn't follow those instructions. Make sure that you name it units.dat (I see above you say you named it test.dat, that won't work).
Later on I changed it. By the way, voyager posted the comment while I was typing mine.
ADDITION:
wtf??? okay, as a test mod I made a marine with nuke as attack (using datedit) (1000 atk, 255 cooldown, 20 range) okay now when I reopen units.dat, this is the stats I get for the marine:
Hit Points: -7105858
Shields: 55294
Armor: 154
Upgrade: Terran Infantry Armor
Minerals: 24473
Vespene: 43152
Time: 4049
Ground Weapon: Gauss rifle (normal)
Max Hits: 208
Air Weapon: Flame Thrower (Gui Montag)
Max Hits: 231
Supply Required: 95 (terran and protoss checked)
Provided: 95
Space required/provided: 190
Score build/destroy: 40382
Unit Size: small
sight: 118
subunit range: 172
It was NOTHING like this when I saved it.
Sounds like a program other than DatEdit caused a corruption, most likely a mpq editor...
mind telling us what programs you used to edit this? (and if you edited any of the settings on them)
Hm. That sounds really weird. But here I have a couple questions:
1) Are you just using DatEdit for editing it? Arsenal III corrupts like the very devil.
2) Have you tried MPQ Compactor? (Although it might just call WinMPQ, now that I think about it.) I think I provided a link to it earlier. I just use that and have never had any problems. I don't think MPQDraft would be corrupting...
Try this test, as this should determine where it corrupts. After each step, open the file again. If it's fouled up, stop and report it.
Load the default, change something simple(give the Marine 10 extra health or something), and save as units.dat in "Test Mod/arr". Open it.
Compact it into an MPQ with WinMPQ. Then, unzip it again. Open it.
Load the MPQ. See if the change takes effect. Then, exit, unzip, and open.
If all else fails, you can delete the stuff and make/download/unzip it again. It's pretty drastic, and a major pain in the neck, but if the files/programs are corrupted, it might be the only way around it.
omfg.... read the freaking sticky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chill out, people - all this scream about one little DAT file? Stay cool
