I don't see how him being a smoker is related to him stomping on the lump in the floor. Anyone is capable of doing that. I think it'd be hilarious if this was meant to be serious.

He thought it was his cigarettes, but since he already finished the carpet, he thought he'd just stomp it in so it's not visible. He then realised that it's not the cigarettes that was under there, but the hamster.
In short, cigarettes killed the hamster

If he wasnt addicted to ciggarettes he wouldnt of stomped on the hampster but then again if he wasnt a carpenter he wouldnt of killed the hampster
