Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> How Do You Do This?

How do you make a waving effect on the ground? Like in the A&O Saga Trailer there was a part when the ground "shimmered"

I think I know what you are talking about....

It is a floor hatch (cloaked) and they toggled the doodad state for it, so the hatch opens and closes looking like a shimmering blur.

I was meaning to ask tux about it or spend the 2 minutes to figure it out but since you made this post . . .

How do you cloak the floor hatch, cause disable doodad will simply open it.

Do you check the cloaked box in SF or something differant?

You disable it with an oberserver nearby I believe. At least that's how i think i did it before.

just keep refreshing and looking at the random map making tips, it will appear after a while...

At first glance I thought the effect was done using a swarm of observors. Wasn't paying much attention though, so I could be wrong. You guys are referring to the chase scene on the vulture, right? It was more of a heat wave look than a shimmering look, if you ask me. But, maybe you're talking about something else and I just missed the point entirely bangin.gif .

Nope Bolt, this trick was created pre-starforge. I cant remember how to do it though but Im sure if u just mess around with the doodad state youll get it soon enough.

Well actually I was playing the map in single-player mode and I used the cheat "black sheep wall" to see the spot with the floor hatches. The floor hatches were closed, and completely visible.

I think that it cloaks just disabling it.

Cloaked observers flying around.
Pretty much how i've done it.
Make a bunch of big groups of observers and order them to move to desifnated areas.
Wraiths are also good.

Disabling doodad will only disable 1 Floor Hatch.
Maybe you must use the trick that you use to make a 1 location bound,
to center location/disable on a floor hatch then to the next really fast while having
a detecter above then kill the detecter and make it disable then enable.
Might work?

I just thought it would be odd that a detecotor would cause the floor hatch to cloak, because thats a situation that would happen quite reguararly with the basic staredit. Since disable doodad state is intended for things like that.

On a second note though. The differance might be related to whom owns the floor hatch (since you can place it as a unit in x-tra). I guess if you give the floor hatch to a computer player, disabled it, and put a detector on it for a breif amount of time it will cloak in addition to opening.

I think you disable it twice and it cloaks. Not too sure. You can also cloak traps too, like when they open they can be cloaked. smile.gif

Yeah, I think that it was with disable twice.

EDIT: This is the tip but I don't know if it is right

Cool trick: If you want to make a believable looking "heat wave" or "water blur" effect, then simply place a lot of floor hatch units around the desired area (with small locations directly over each one), disable them (at their locations), then cast a cloak detector over them for about 200 or so milliseconds, remove it, and then finally have a trigger to constantly toggle their doodad states (with hyper triggers). The hatches will become cloaked, and toggling their doodad states will make them display their opening and closing animations rapidly, thus producing a "jiggling" on the terrain beneath them!

Unit floor hatches cloak like most anything else when disabled, doodad floor hatches don't. Blizzard never intended to use the unit floor hatches I believe.

I bet they DID intend to use it, but decided not to when it was already in the game.

That's why the name of the unit is Floor Hatch (UNUSED).

All the unused units of SC are there because they did intend to use them, but they didnt.
