1) How is modding in general? Is it hard to learn?
Modding in general is a lot of fun!
I wouldn't say modding is too hard to learn. Simple things, such as .dat editing are very easy to do, and you'd be able to pick that up within a day. Iscripting, in my opinion, is the hardest modding thing to learn (besides ASM
), but there are helpful manuals and such that you can look at.
2) What do I start with?
As KK said, DTBK's tutorial is a great thing to start off with, as it covers most of the basic modding skills.
3) What tools should I get?
To start off modding, I'd reccomend getting DatEdit and TBLPad for editing things, and WinMPQ + MPQDraft to package them. Once you've used those, I would move on to learning iscripting, and then MemGrafting.
4) Where do I get modding resources?
Our DLDB is a great place to get modding tools. www.infoceptor.net and www.samods.org are good places if you need custom graphics and portraits.
5) Any good example mods?
Field Command!
Just kidding. I think that the Doom mods, StarCraft: New Assault and ORTC are good examples of some of the things that can be achieved.
6) What can I make with modding?
Almost anything. It depends on how creative you are with the resources Blizzard gave us.
Custom spells? Sure. Unique techtrees? Of course! Massive explosions? Defenitely!
