Can someone please tell me exactly how to introduce a brand new .grp file to starcraft to use for a unit, if this is even possible.
It isn't. You'll need to modify an old one. Just edit one that no one actually uses, like Khalis or the Overmind Coccoon. Then have your unit use that as its graphic in the graphics tab of units.dat.
The fact of the matter is, that you CAN do this, but you'll need to sacrifice an original images.dat entry to achieve this (and probably also sprites.dat and flingy.dat as well). What you do is editing the images.tbl file and set the images.tbl-pointer property in images.dat to the line that you've modified/added. Simple as that.
BK correct~! u can add images.tbl-pointer for ur brand new grp file
and also u should make grp file for that pointer
but u couldn't make new id of offset for ur brand new unit
Actually...many mods was use that way such as WC3 TC mod and many other mods
they didn't just replace grp files
they edit and add images.tbl pointer for they new named grp files
I stand corrected. But isn't that pretty much the same thing as replacing an old one, since you have to sacrifice one of the originals to do it?
No you don't, you can add a new grp in the mpq and get it to work without replacing a old one, you just have to use a unused Id in flingy, sprites, and images.dat.
(look at BroodKiller's earlier post for instructions, I don't feel like repeating em.)
I see. You learn something new every day, I guess...
Why is it impossible to create a completely new unit though? i mean brand new flingy and grp's and all..
DoA could certainly elaborate here, but from my limited knowledge I can say that much of SC memory data is pre-allocated with the original size, and you'd need to alter quite a few things here and there to get it to work (if you find it first). It would be a piece of cake if we'd have the source code, but we don't.

So if someone stole the Source code for starcraft we would solve all unknown's and add as many units as we want?

Probably, yes.
