Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> Pluto is no longer a planet

I've been glancing at this over the last couple of weeks, and now it is decided by the International Astronomical Union that Pluto is a "dwarf planet" and that now the solar system technically has only 8 planets.

Call me unscientific, but my whole life I've grown up with the idea that there are 9 planets and I considered Pluto one of my favorites because it was sort of the planetary equivilant of "The Little Engine that Could". I sort of wish that they could've kept the definition as it was to allow Pluto to stay. But if such allocations had been allowed, they'd have to include 3 other Solar System objects as planets under those rules.

So it's either 8 planets or 12. What do you think about all this?

Here's the wikipedia article on the whole thing.

Ya I know what you mean, whatever they come up with will completely out date any information on the topic. Also the U.S. just sent a satellite to pluto expected to reach destination around 2014. They caleed this the first launch to the last planet, because no man made object has gone to the 'planet' pluto yet. It is the only planet that has not been visited by a man made object, this is why there are no pictures available that are clear, only that from the Hubble telescope which is blurry itself.

Poor Pluto. I liked it as a planet. But at least now everything's standard...

Well I think that 8 is definantly better then 12. I don't like it either that we've lost "Planet Pluto" but I reducing the rules for being a planet would have be stupid so I'm glad they didn't do that. If they would have we would now have 12 planets, and a possible 12 more. We would probably have to keep adding and adding planets, since they are a lot of rocks flying out there which we haven't spotted yet.

Hehe, when they are making yet another movie like Armagedeon we might get hit by a 'Dwarf Planet' instead of a large 'roid. Sounds neat, "Mister President a (dwarf) planet is on collision course with Earth."

Ah well they had to take Pluto out although I think most people are already too used to having Pluto as a planet.

I bet you people will still call it a planet.

It won't. Its just that some scientists have to be right about everything. Although it may not be technically a planet by human definitions, I bet it will be a long time (if ever) before people stop calling it a planet.

No, it's not because of how far they are it's because of their sze and what they are made off, and besides i've know that it was not a planet for a long time tongue.gif

Time to take advantage of this... I will go around asking people how many planets there are in our solar system!!! Some will be bound to say 9!!! Muahaha.

Well, this changes a lot of things. Now we can't use the 'My very erratic mother just baked us nine pies.' thing. Well, time to make a new one.

Pluto is still a planet, turn off your h4x and admit it.

When there are less planets it is easier to remember their names.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but dwarf planet contains the word planet, does it not? This means we still have Pluto as a planet. It's jsut a different KIND of planet. We now have dwarf planets, and non-dwarf planets. For the sake of being lazy people simply refer to non-dwarf planets as 'planets'. For the sake of me being lazier than scientists I will also refer to dwarf planets as 'planets' if you here me talking about a planet you can either assume I mean Pluto-Charon, Ceres or Xena and/or Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Urnaus or Neptune.

If you're as lazy as me, problem solved.

Image how you would have felt when you learned that centuries of "science" were wrong and the world is not actually flat. Or when a nobody named Copernicus claims that we are not the center of the universe.

From the way I see it, science is always changing. Nothing is certain.

As a minor note, your first sentence should read "and that now the solar system technically has only 8 planets" instead of "and that now the planet technically has only 8 planets." smile.gif

The wikipedia articles have already done it, and now, all new science literature printed about the planets will have to say there are only 8 planets (classic planets, as they're sometimes called now), and that Pluto and the other objects are dwarf planets.
