What is A StarCraft Campaign?

A campaign is a continuing storyline or set of adventures, typically involving the same characters. The purpose of the continuing storyline is to introduce a further aspect into the game: that of development, improvement, and growth (or degeneration) of the characters. In a campaign, a single session becomes a scene or perhaps act within an overall story arc. At its inception, a campaign may or may not have a defined conclusion. A campaign by definition spans more than one session of play. Certain aspects of the game are nearly always constant throughout a campaign: the setting, the players, and the maker. The maker for a campaign is said to Create the campaign. StarCraft Campaigns fall somewhere between the single map UMS Scenario and a custom mod. They're a string of linked "trigger" maps that usually sets out to tell a story. Many of the bigger campaigns involve a high degree of customisation and some high production values that go well beyond StarEdit's imposed limits, using hacked executables and bending a lot of rules. Here's just a small selection ive found:

StarCraft Campaigns
  • After Brood War: A four episode (20 missions total) single player campaign which starts where Brood War stops. It focuses on all the existing heroes and locations without adding any new characters. Hosted at StarCraft Single player Campaigns
  • The Enslavers: Blizzard Entertainment's very own custom campaign, designed to kick-start the whole StarEdit thing all those years ago. Evil pirate Alan Schezar is out to secure his own pet Zerg Overmind after the end of the first StarCraft storyline. You and several StarCraft heroes must try and stop him. You can find this at the StarCraft Compendium
  • Antioch Chronicles: This is one of the biggest and earliest of the custom campaigns that ever appeared for StarCraft, with the first missions appearing within months of the game's release. The Antioch Chronicles came in two large episodes, each with nine missions each, and featuring huge amounts of recorded voices and extensive trigger driven unit choreography. There was a third in the works that was never finished. The high degree of polish and character banter sets it apart from many fan campaigns. Both episodes use their own custom executables. The full campaign and the whole Antioch and you can also find it hosted at Campaign Creations.

    Aspects of a campaign
A campaign is characterized by the following aspects:[list]
  • The rules - What underlying game system is used? What changes or variations has the maker made to the rules?
  • The game world or setting - Where do the adventures take place? What makes this world or place unique?
  • An underlying storyline - Are the players a part of larger events occurring in the game world? Not all campaigns have such a storyline, but most at least have recurring characters.
  • Flavor of gameplay - Does the game focus on role playing, combat, or something else? How powerful are the player characters compared to others in the world? How much of the story is dictated by the game master, and how much is up to the players?
Types of campaigns
  • A hack and slash or dungeon crawl campaign focuses on slaying monsters and finding treasure. This type of campaign is often very episodic. Many players of Dungeons & Dragons favor this type of campaign.
  • A wargame campaign has a focus on military and political activities, generally involving the affairs of entire fictional states. Miniature wargaming overlaps and dovetails into role playing at this level. Games Workshop started life as a roleplay company, but through an analogous process have transformed themselves into a miniatures manufacturing company with support material for entire fictional worlds - all to support their own role/miniature campaign concepts.
  • A four color or superheroic campaign is similar in flavor to comic books. The players are often given tasks, such as supervillains to stop, by their superiors.
  • A detective campaign focuses on mysteries that must be solved by the players or that unfold as the game goes along. These may be ordinary crimes, or mysteries of the paranormal. Certain games, such as Call of Cthulhu, are designed specifically with this type of campaign in mind.

It needs to be more focused on StarCraft rather than a Wikipedia copy.

Don't forget how this is a forum for team projects, not simply campaigns. Its a place for people who are working on a map to get together and discuss it. Thats what I picture it at least, less of a map in productions area, as a place for individuals to have a discussion with members in their group. People in the rest of SeN can leave comments of how the map could be improved or changed, but the focus would be about the members discussing with one another.

By the way... why exactly do we need a pinned definition of a campaign?
