I want to start customizing my Windows XP a bit more, mainly by changing the basic graphics (bar on top where it says program being used, 'Start' button, etc) to create a style. I know it's also possible to create a custom bootscreen and many other things, and was told that this kind of Windows editing (editing skin, not how it works) is legal.

Does anyone know exactly what files you need to edit, how you edit them and how you get them into a usable format, and do more advanced changes like the bootscreen image (usually a flag divided by four with 'Windows' below it)? I don't want to edit much, just replace certain files with custom-made ones (and then have them work properly).

http://www.wincustomize.com/ has a bunch of premade ones, as well as links to the tools you need to make them.

Do you know how to change sounds?

Why change them? Replace them with new ones, even those in SEN's database (if you get them into the right format).

I'll check that site out smile.gif.

If you want to change the sounds, go to Control Panel>Sounds Speech and Audio Devices>Change the sound scheme. Then you just click on the thing you want to change in the list and click the browse button next to it. Boy did I have fun with this when I discovered it. tongue.gif

To edit the style, you will need a .msstyles de/recompiler.
To edit the bootlogo, you will need to use ResHack to edit ntoskrnl.exe.
