...It specifically says this is the H.G. Wells version, so I have no idea where you got the movie idea from. Typical? Uh, sure.

well, what is so atypical about this map then?

it seems like diplomacy with different unit names - which DO NOT make the map good or unique.

It's not diplomacy, for one, because cities are represented by Gateways and ports by Starports, both invincible, and are taken over after fighting off militia. Air units are constricted to water, and players don't have a choice of who to fight.

Not sure how this is diplomacy.

Also, it has a slow combat system to allow tactical and strategical setup.

Yep, totally a diplomacy.

That's how diplomacy is meant to be played, not the crappy Gold 7.7 massing business. Have you ever played Republique (amazing diplo), Blood and Iron (not as good as Repub but still good), or any 7ED made diplo ex. Imperialism II, World at Arms and Crown of Glory. Each of those uses a similar, if not exact system with cities.

Having invincible cities and seaports don't make a map unique, it makes it a better thought out diplo map, which, made poorly, can still turn out like a 7.7, despite the makers best intent.

Now, on to the good parts. I've long enjoyed ACTUAL diplo, and by reading the above I'm sure you know which ones I refer to and which I don't. I understand how the Brits were unprepared for the attack, but the army and money differences in the beginning worry me a slight bit. It seems that a Martian player can have the map dominated early on because of the balance issue in the early game if you are not careful.

Good luck on this.

P.S. You might want to add a "[/quote]" at the end of your post to make it appear in a quote

P.P.S. Hmm, doesn't work on mine either. Odd.

It's based off the book, not the movie if it's from HG Wells, because the movie was based off HG Well's book, so therefore, this is should be based on the book!

Good luck with the map!

Ahh the H.G. Wells version was great, I have the 2 disc CD around here somewhere. I used to whistle to the martian music haha. This will be similar to the movie, but it will surpass it i'm willing to bet.
