No, you're confusing that with windows messenger. Windows Live Messenger is probably the best one there. The only one that has anything over it is Trilly, because it can do AIM contacts as well. WLM has a lot of nice features, including some BBCode support, file sharing folders, video/audio calls, customizable colour schemes and backgrounds, etc.
If you haven't figured it out yet, I use WLM.

I use gaim because
1. its open-source
2. its psychic
3. it wont pop up random sites when it opens
4. it logs onto more than 1 protocol
In terms of protocol (not client) AIM > MSN
