You can be to distracted on the cell phone and crash. Or it could raise your stress if your in an over-the-phone arguement. wink.gif

Using a cell phone while driving is as bad as driving drunk. -MythBusters.

If it isn't over a headset, you have to actually take one hand off the wheel to hold the phone. This makes it a lot harder to drive physically.

For example, they just passed a law in California that will ban the use of handheld cell phones while driving, but not the use of a Bluetooth or other headset to talk. As far as that bill was concerned, it's the lack of an extra arm on the wheel, not the simple distraction of talking.

thats been a law in new york for a long time now.

As a Californian, I have yet to see that law excecuted (though I do know it was passed and all). Its so bad out here, though, because people never pay attention when they're on the phone. I drive with only one hand, so I don't think that would make much of a difference to me, but when I have to think about where I'm going while talking on the phone it seems so overwhelming. Oh, and I have a headset for my phone, so I'm not physically holding it to my ear.

And then there's the fact that I've been cut off so many times by people who aren't watching the road due to talking on their phones. Its just really dangerous.

I drive with two fingers on the freeway...
One hand otherwise.

A cell phone is distracting though, because you are more focus into your conversation instead of letting your brain think about the idiot on your left side and what he might do.

It is dangerous to text while you are on the highway. You have to read them as well.

Pssh I dont find it wrong driving while cell phone is on. Besides it doesnt matter if your driving with one hand because people have done that many times.

And if you want to drive with both hands just put it on speaker phone.

Thats like saying your using a Cell phone an using a shopping cart at the same time and you will die. sly.gif

Um, no it isn't. Shopping carts weigh something like 20-30 pounds. Cars can weigh a ton or more. You have direct (manual) control over a shopping cart. A car in Drive will move forward without the brakes in effect, and you're using a mechanism to move the wheels. Injuries sustained from a shopping cart collision are likely to be nonexistent, as where with a car..

There are infinitely more contrasts to be made, but you get the idea.

I hope.

I've almost had a couple of fenders due to talking on the phone while driving, which is why I almost never do it anymore. I keep my phone off while I'm in the car unless I'm expecting a REALLY important call.

When on a cell phone, you drive with the same skill as the elderly (60+ years of age).

A study a couple years ago revealed that our brians cannot multitask, therefor if you are driving and talking on the cell phone, you are in fact alternating your brains activities between driving, listening, interpreting the speech, and speaking accordingly.
If you notice your concentration on driving is not split up into 1 of 4 things your concentrating on, so your driving skill and reaction time diminishes equally. wink.gif

I never drove so I wouldn't know. But from what I have seen, just dont use cell phones while in the car driving. just pisses me off when I see a soccer mom with a cellphone driving all over the place.

@Rantent: um.... I am pretty sure many people here can watch tv, listen to mp3, play sc, read a book, do homework, and eat dinner all at the same time with out missing a second from the exercise. well.. at least I can...smile.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2006-09-28 at 23:47:23
But could you quote something from the television show, the mp3 player, what someone said on sc, what the last sentence you read in the book, what your last homework problem was about, with equal capability as you could simply doing one of those things?

Actually by definition, if you have multiple pathways of neurons firing at once, that are not connected to one another, you are considered schizophrenic.

Oh okay, that explains it. My friends made me really paranoid, too, saying that they've seen people get caught for it already. Maybe they're making it up or perhaps cops are getting a huge head start. biggrin.gif

FTW! tongue.gif

I find that it's not the hand issue, it's the brain issue, as previously mentioned. Many can drive with one hand on the wheel, and some need to also at some times, as they drive manual (stick).

Hell, I can't multitask. I can't even change the radio efficiently while driving, though that may just be from inexperience.

Actually the reason I drive automatic is because I live in Los Angeles and traffic blows (at certain times of the day, mind you). Having to constantly stop and start while driving manual isn't much fun. So I went with the easy route. biggrin.gif

Questions like this are the reason car accidents account to so many deaths in North America.

A two minute call on low traffic roads isn't going to distract any experienced driver. A conversation that lasts the entire drive, including over some parts of driving that require a lot of attention, is asking for trouble. It won't matter if the driver is smart enough to put his car ahead of his conversation in priorities, but it clearly will if someone thinks missing thirty seconds of his or her conversation isn't worth risking the lives of him or herself and other drivers on the road.

I believe the idea behind the headset laws, is that experienced drivers talk to the person in the shotgun seat all the time. If talking were that distracting, pretty much everyone whose ever had a passenger would have been in an accident. The difference is though, the passenger knows when a difficult situation is on the road, and avoid provoking thought. An advantage of the headset, however, is that you don't get any dumb ****s taking their eyes off the road while moving to search for their cell phone.

In summary... I believe if the conversation is direct (not thought provoking) and the driver is experienced, it doesn't mean **** that you're using a cellphone. There's nothing wrong with telling someone that you're on your way somewhere. But it's not the right time for stressful conversations =) Really I'm split on whether or not cell phones should be legal while driving. They can be used responsibly, but there are just so many stupid people.

How do you figure? I don't really find it that difficult, though I haven't really driven in stop and go traffic either...

I think that people with their license (not provisionals, aka 17 and under) should be allowed, but if they get in any sort of accident and they were on the phone, then a lot of the fault should go to them, whether or not it WAS becuase chances are, if they were not on the phone, they could have avoided it [more efficiently].
