I was debating with myself whether or not characters were considered Original Artwork. I came to the conclusion that original art should be an environment with subjects (e.g. a city with people and maybe one person who brings focus or even a plant). Character design doesn't need meaning like Original Art does, but rather it prepares you for Original Art in case you want to use a character or not. Basically, here you can post characters you thought of and maybe give a description, and we will give tips on how to improve your character if you wish to progress with it and rate the character if the artist requests it. Here's a character:
[attachmentid=21327]
Pluta - Weilds a giant dual scythe (resembles an ax) called the Evening Star. An assassin.

Before anybody posts saying, "This belongs in Original Artwork," may I say that I do not believe character design is original artwork and vice versa.

You know DEAD, everything that isn't in the stickied section doesn't have to be a competition of some sort. How about I rephrase: Character Design is not Original Artwork, if anything, it's Concept Art.

Characters of what? I don't think your 1 single picture(bad quality) of a girl makes it a character.

Hey look I draw a rock, it's a character! You need something more than a named picture to have a character.

Use the pinned threads for your dravings, they're there for a reason. sleep.gif

Of course it wouldn't be my character alone. I would hope others would post as well. Congratulations with your rock, what does it do? Does it have powers? What does it look like? What color is it? Character design isn't a signature, avatar, nor original artwork. That's why I didn't post there and created my own topic. Maybe give it a week or so and see if this topic evolves.

So your saying that your "character" is not artwork and is not original? It doesn't belong in this forum then. tongue.gif

Original artwork is more of a composition. Character design is a subgroup of Original Artwork with environment being another, mood, etc.

Characters deserve to be called art just as much as those 2 tone white canvases in the galleries... HOW I LOATHE THEM!

Anyways, I've been debating with myself as to what style should I stick? I'm proficient in alot, anime, realism, abstractionism, cubism, emotionalism, etc... I've been drawing alot of realistic cartoony things lately... I like it.

Post up then. It's best to draw realistic first because then your style comes naturally later.

I see character design as being less of a visual art, but more along the lines of literature and writing, as characters are hardly represented by their appearance alone. I have a few written characters for an rpg I have been incubating for quite some time, and I think I might be able to give them an appearance, but it isn't the primary focus of their creation.

I usually lose things before I can scan them. The ones I do are from my school appointed sketchbook.

I actually think that the visual aspect is very important to a characters personality.

A picture isn't character design. Character design is the accumulation of their thoughts, ideals, and personality, along with the problems they encounter and how those problems are resolved. There are more aspects to character design, but I don't really feel like listing all of them. A picture doesn't tell us much at all of the character.

That's character development.

I don't see anything much about your "character" besides ugly bad quality drawing with a single line description. So what makes it a character?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by HolySin on 2006-10-07 at 21:00:20
It's a flat character. Also, it was just an example.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Gigins on 2006-10-08 at 03:48:03
Then I don't see any reason for this to be in a seperate topic not in artwork. Nobody except my rock seems to be interested in this. Please don't open this up again. sleep.gif
