Here we go, yet again.

As a reminder, September's Theme was Forests.
Let's get that judging criteria out there again:

Theme (10) - How well does the map fit the theme? Something premade with a few text changes (ie, your robot map from last month which you didn't enter with "ROBOT TREE" isn't a good idea). I plan to change this over from the black and white 0 to 10 ratings with actual ratings now. The map will now be graded on how important the theme is to the central ideas of the map. A map scoring 0 on this won't be graded further, regardless of how well it fits.

Fun (25) - Most of the time, the deciding factor in contest entries. Important for me as I'm playing the map. Am I running around having a good time, or watching a unit talk to itself in a movie? Are there huge bugs that prevent play of the maps? Are there cool new systems and spells and difficulty levels and such things to keep the game interesting? Replay value is a plus for this score. If I ever go to this map again, is it going to be to play it over and over and give to my friends or to delete the scm/scx?

Aesthetics and Professionalism (15) - Did you use one type of terrain tile and no text color? Are there mispellings distracting me at every turn with some poorly made triggers? Hopefully you can create something that looks and feels decent. I'm not asking for extensive extended terrain or hundreds of sprites, a map that seems well-made should score well. On the subject of professionalism, please PLAYTEST your maps before submission. Nothing looks dumber than a map that obviously hasn't been tested. Having lots of bugs will definitely lower your score here.


Forest_Rumble_1_.scx by Kyuubi.
THEME: 10/10
A rumble in the forest, awesome.
FUN: 19/25
A very fun and interesting map. It starts off too hard, and becomes a lame endurance test by the end. Could have been better explained, some times I had no idea what was happening.
PROFESSIONALISM: 13/15
Very well made map. The last stage was very disappointing, however. It was a lame endurance and boredom inducing test.
TOTAL: 42/50 - First Place! 800 minerals!

Forest_Offense.scx by happybikini
THEME: 10/10
Very Aeon of Strife, yet... so foresty.
FUN: 17/25
A rather fun map. Hard the first time, but then you figure what you're doing. Unfortunately it's hard to beat the other paths after you beat your own.
PROFESSIONALISM: 13/15
No bugs, and a very well made map. Though I don't understand how a bear (Ultralisk) is larger than a wolf (Zergling). tongue.gif
TOTAL: 40/50 - Second Place! 400 minerals!

Forest_Maze.scx by Fwop_
THEME: 10/10
A whole forest based maze, awesome.
FUN: 15/25
Some enemies are a bit tough. Also, the map is a bit exhausting to play. I didn't have the endurance to try a third time. tongue.gif
PROFESSIONALISM: 13/15
Very well made, except for a bug. I wasn't blinded when I had five players. Not that I was complaining. wink.gif
TOTAL: 38/50 - Third Place! 200 minerals!

Mitosis_v1.09....scx by Green_NuN
THEME: 5/10
Mitosis which is nature which occurs in forests? Strecting it a bit too much, buddy.
FUN: 17/25
A very fun map and a COOL concept. However, it doesn't pay off to attack first at all.
PROFESSIONALISM: 10/15
Triggers could have used a binary countoff or something to make them all run faster. It needs something else to spice up gameplay... perhaps upgrades or something.
TOTAL: 32/50

Forest_Fire_Fighting.scx by roryfenrir
THEME: 10/10
Fighting a forest fire, okay.
FUN: 10/25
Not very fun. Drop two loads of water, refuel, repeat. Not very dynamic.
PROFESSIONALISM: 8/15
Triggers didn't seem well made. It kept dropping water before it could reload. Also, some logic problems such as exploding fires, random fires not on trees, and fire engines in a forest.
TOTAL: 28/50

Werewolf_v1._2_0.scx by Wormer
THEME: 10/10
A forest, and a cold one at that.
FUN: 10/25
It's the Thing, but not as well done.
PROFESSIONALISM: 10/15
You spelled it "Wherewolf" in the map's title.
TOTAL: 30/50

Forest_Fire_.scx by Laser_Dude
THEME: 10/10
Forest fire, okay...
FUN: 5/25
What was the point of this map? I randomly both cause and fight fires? Am I the limited dungeon master, or what?
PROFESSIONALISM: 7/15
The map seems cool, but none of us could figure out how to play it. Also, the intro has a logic problem... those civilians cause a fire but the plane crash does not? WTF?
TOTAL: 22/50

Escape_the_exploding_forest.scx
THEME: 10/10
An exploding forest. Okay.
FUN: 5/25
All the fun of an exploding forest and running out of it. But... uh, why was the forest explosing?
PROFESSIONALISM: 0/15
CAPS LOCK PLEASE. Unit unplacables are everywhere. Critters are a bad choice. Also, other players block you and force into explosion at beginning.
TOTAL: 15/50

Forrest_N_nja_Battle.scx
THEME: 5/10
Ninjas fight in a forest, cool.
FUN: 5/25
VERY buggy. You said it wasn't playtested, and it's obvious. It MIGHT be a good map, I can't tell. The concept looked cool though. tongue.gif
PROFESSIONALISM: 2/15
Read the theme. Yeah, you used it your map title. Spell it correctly!
Buggy as hell. Text displays and unplacables running around everywhere. Player 1 getting 3 units, obviously intended for each player to have one. Not for playing now, but if fixed this could become a good map.
TOTAL: 12/50

Volcano_Run_Jungle.scm
THEME: 1/10
Volcano? City? WTF? You get one point for tree named units which are nothing like trees.
FUN: 2/25
No fun at all. Red slot is rigged, and I build enough cannons to destroy the "magma" in roughly 4 seconds.
PROFESSIONALISM: 5/15
The spelling and grammar in this map was apalling. I was able to walk past several of the "walls" in the city area. As mentioned above, red slot is rigged.
TOTAL: 8/50




A great ten map turnout. The top maps were quite impressive, and overall I'd say this was a very good contest. October's is going to start soon, so be on the lookout. I'll get the prizes out and download links up soon.

I have things to do. I'll get the DLDB entries and spotlight entries done later.

I can't believe it, mine had good potential, but I didn't have time to get a mission breifing, or any triggers that tell you what to do. I also forgot to add victory and defeat triggers. The point was, you were supposed to survive longer than all your enemies.

please explain how the map worked, laser dude? out of the four of us, four of us had no idea how to play... not to mention it was too easy to put out fires anyhow. the most fun i had was defiler humping shattered_moose. tongue.gif

i only had a few days(like 5 or 6 days because that was when i got my idea) to work on so i didn't get much testing and features in. i could implement my other features, tweak up the bosses, and everything else like random power ups, traps, and other stuff. ill see what i can do in it.

I have seen some of the maps DrgnAlchem has made (even if they weren't complete maps tongue.gif ) and that does not resemble anything remotely close to something he would submit. It even says "Cactuar2000" on it. I'm curious as to how Cactuar could get mixed up with Drgn anyway...

man im surpirsed, 5th and 8th out of 11. this is only like my 4th time doing a contest. Im almost surprised escape the exploding forest didnt get last

I was 2 places down with a half-finished map.

I think I'll do the other half.

EDIT: this was my first time in a contest, I think next time "time management" will be quite a bit more important, getting civilians is more important then spending them.

Wait a second... Did I accidentally submit the testing version with 6 civs for red?

EDIT: I found the civ problem within ten seconds. blushing.gif It was a simple matter of putting in the wrong players. oops.gif

ALSO: It was supposed to be a survival contest, but I didn't get around to setting up the death method. To shoot water you would use dark swarm, or use disrup. web with the mars water bomber, and with the helijet, you would just unload reavers. To fill up, you send your units to the lake at the middle. I realized I forgot to use CUWP, and they weren't spawning with any energy, so I added a trigger to give them energy off the start, but it also worked when they returned to base. If I had better managed my time, or had more time, I would've fixed those, added more tutorials, added a mission briefing, done a multiplayer playtest, done the unfinished water tanker unit, and finished death and victory. By then, well, I probably would've thought of another finishing touch.

Heh I know what you mean with all the lots and lots of schoolwork that just pounds on you. I practically have no time to map on weekdays due to the massive amoutns of homework they're throwing at me.

But school was just beginning so they cant bombard you has heavily as they are doing now. Good luck to the next mappers hope they can manage enough time.

Congratz everyone. Very nice work. Good job. It's a good thing I didn't enter this time because I woulda had some competition ^_^. Maybe I'll find time to enter the next context though. Also thanks to Moose who makes these possible..
