Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Super Fast Units...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Burbble on 2004-08-07 at 14:32:44
Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to make the units "Super Fast" (i.e. P14 Scarab), but WITHOUT making cloaked units visible (namely Dark Templars).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Edit: This is happening to me, it's not theoretical.

Why would Dark Templars become visible? They only do if they start off owned by P161 and then you give them to a player and dtect it only works once.

Just place th P14 untis, you don't have to worry about DT's becoming visible.

I placed a P14 Scarab (unit 85). Dark Templar's are "visible" for players who are not giving vision... meaning that you can see the sprite, but you can't click on it.

Have you been able to do this without the DTs "appearing"?

If it matters, I am using the Twilight tileset.

Thanks for the help, I am going to keep fiddling around with it to see if I can fix it...

The Dark templar you are talking about is a sprite, not a unit?

Aha! I fixed it.

Okay, let me clarify what was going on:

I had placed DTs (units) on a map, which were then manipulated with triggers. There was also a P14 Scarab to make the units run around real fast.

The problem was that the DTs could be seen -- their sprites could be seen, but you could not actually click on them. This defeated the whole purpose of using a Dark Templar (so the players cannot see it).

I tried to recreate this problem in another map, but to no avail. I have no clue why it happened.

To fix it, I deleted the units and created triggers to place them. And, voila! No more could you see them.
Then, just out of curiosity, I placed the units again, how I had them before. Disable the trigger, and test the map... And they're not visible!
I'm still going to use the trigger, though.

Seems like it was just a totally freak glitch!
But if anyone has a logical explanation for why this happened, please feel free to post it.

So, in case you did not want to read all that:

The solution was to delete the units and place them again.

Don't ya just love map making? tongue.gif

It probably happened because you placed the original DTs before you placed the P14 unit. Any unit placed before you place the P14 unit will be "frozen".

Ooooh, ok. I wish I'd known that 26 hours ago. wallbash.gif

Thanks for the tip.

cloaking + unnormal speed = weird results. go use an arbiter on some units and see what happens with x4 speed. happy.gif

lol cool1.gif

I guess it shows that the original Starcraft Engine was built very well, it can endure a lot of manipulation from people such as ourselves. biggrin.gif

You know, dark templars are easily visible, you just hallucinate it, it uncloaks. smile.gif
but anyways I think you umm... are seeing things? Or maybe while you were testing it one of your friends hallucinated his dt and went Whoa Wierd bla bla bla and made it look like it was the map that did it!

If no friends tested it with you then...

No its a common problem with placing units before placing the P14 Scarab, its just some wierd effects that happen. It does however sound interesting to have them sprited and not clickable, such as you know they are there, but cannot prove it. Interesting idea for a Horror Map.

No, I don't test maps publically.

(I am not aiming the below comments directly at anyone, it is purely a generalization. Your comments just reminded of the, unfortunately, high number of people who actually do this.)

[rant]I find it incredibly annoying, in fact, when people host horribly incomplete maps to test if a single trigger works... I don't understand why you can't just test your maps alone, at least until you have a working Beta version, instead of wasting other people's time and hard drive space because you don't know how to make triggers.
If you are someone who does this, I encourage you not to. You can easily test everything either alone (still on B.Net), or with a friend that you trust to not distribute your unfinished map to other people. Or just use two computers that are networked together, it's far more productive that way. ranting.gif [/rant]

Thats what i thought, also interesting is that if you make something disabled, but dont have it viewed, you get left with a showing sprite, so give it to a Black Coloured Computer Player and it will be dark and such, or go mad.
