I went back and read the debate on membergroups between IP and DTBK (that debate is in
this topic). They both cite different motivations as the ones that members "should" be posting. I figured... let's just ask the members why they post.
So, why do you post, and does advancement in membergroups motivate you? Does it promote spam or quality posting?
I post to communicate with other people over the net.
Oh, if you're staff, assume that you're NOT staff for the purpose of this poll.

Note: Skip to the fourth paragraph if you want to see a summary of what I'm saying.

When I first came here, only the Regular status existed and I reached it pretty quickly without spamming (mostly due to the heated debates in the Bush topics... yikes...). I never really thought too much of it, and I assume that's because I figured it was so easy to become a Regular since I reached it so soon.
And then once the Elite status was created, I was still pretty apathetic up until the point where I reached 1,000 posts. To be perfectly honest, that's about the time when I increased posting habits to achieve the Elite goal. It took me a little over a month, but I finally got it and was pretty thrilled (and enjoyed a nice PM from Urmom congratulating me

).
Now that's not to say that I spammed like crazy to get those 500 posts. In fact if you look at my past posts, I may throw a few jokes into my responses here and there, but generally speaking each post is pretty relevant to what is being discussed. And rather than posting in a select few topics like I used to, I was starting to check more topics in forums I rarely visited.
To make this long story short, I was motivated to visit more forums and post a lot more on SEN because of the thought of becoming an Elite before we switched to v5. Even though I check SEN daily, I personally became a lot more active in many different discussions all over the place as opposed to sticking in the clan forums or the "Maps in Production" forum.
I posted to become a regular, but Elite is so far off...
I don't post for titles or benefits, but rather for the joy of communication and because helping others in map making assistance so that they finish their maps makes you feel swell and somewhat important. Regulars and Elites are nothing more than older members to me, and post count seems entirely meaningless.
Minerals on the other hand, are something I somewhat value ond possibly subconsciously used to judge others (High amounts most likely mean elite map makers that win contests and valuable posters.), but I could live without them quite easily.
I post to talk, but being an elite would be a nice bounus. When I came close to being a regular, I started going on a posting spree to get it. I assume I'd do the same if I ever came close enough to elite. I probably would.
What really motivates me to post is minerals. I'm trying to save up for a better looking shiny name

I post to talk with people, but I really liked climbing through the ranks. I was 50 posts off from elite when the attack occured and I was made a moderator, so I'll never get a fancy golden name.

I post to chat with people online, but they are somwhat important only because I like the extra things that you can do, Ever since the attack I havent cared as much, but I am trying to get them back, I have a few hundred to go, I mostly post in Misc and Mp so those arent worth anything so that kind of shows where I am with this.
Not too much really. It is always nice to have a little more respect because people know you have been around here longer and probably know more. The benefits are also pretty nice. If only I get get those 100 more posts to become Regular..

I have kind of lost faith of geting elite status, because when v5 is uploaded I believe that all accounts are going to be set to 0 for everything. I wish this not to happen.
Once I figured out about the different membergroups whose sole requirement was more posts, I became motivated to reach regular and I did spam just a tiny bit for a couple of days. But I hated what my posts sounded like when I was forcing them to be a certain length when I really didn't have much to say, so I just returned to my normal posting habits and eventually became regular. Now I don't really care about reaching the elite milestone, but if I do, then yay for me.
Yes, while I was still more of a newbie, I did look at post amounts to determine someone's weight in the community. But nowadays I determine that by just reading what they have to say. You only need read a few posts from a member to see their quality, regardless of how many posts they've actually made.
I admit with all honestly that a good motivation behind my activity over the past couple year has been for those little advancements in rank.

Seems like it worked out pretty well for you, too.

First when I was noob to the site I always hated being a member because your normally blamed for stuff and you follow trends that lead up to knowere.
Example:..
I fell for the Mini fad and now I can't change back and seeing as It's too late to spend my minerals I'm trapped with this.
But I wanted to be another step up so after getting through some consequences I eventually made it to regularism which isnt as cool as I thought but I now a days post responsibly but never spammy so..
Somewhat
I have forced some posts before just to raise in posts, not going to lie, but I post on SEN for more than just status. I do think the ranks are cool, though.
It is funny how everyone says that they once tried getting as many posts as possible by adding more than what they mean, they call it while they were noobs.
Yeah, that's interesting. That would make me a "noob" still, then. Though I don't really force myself to type at least 150 characters or whatever the amount is. I have always been pretty wordy, I'd say. I'm a regular Charles Dickens.
I think I write a little more than I normally do now, so that it counts as a post, I dont really spam, I just add to it and try to get it to about 2 sentances on the reply box.
It motivated me somewhat when I was on the verge of Regularhood, but I don't see it as making much of a difference now that Elite status is over 1000 posts away...
They slightly motivated me to post. As Lord said, the only time it really effects you is when you're really close to being a Regular. I think they do play an important role in the SEN community though, I was certainly excited when I got my hard-earned regular status.
it was important pre-regular. i actually remember upping my posts per day just to get the 200 posts i need for regular(before that i'd post like once a week). now that i am a regular though, i'm not striving for eliteness since its so far away.
Theyre pretty important. I like the PM box perks especially, unfortunately i dont post enough in the areas that count to get them. If your going to get rid of the classes, make the elite stuff all basic.
The PM box stuff can be bought in v5. What Mini_Moose is trying to decide is whether or not keeping usergroups would be good, knowing the fact that you don't need to be a Regular or Elite to get more PM space.
Let's just talk generally, because minerals are not the godly solution to anything.
Minerals can be considered for all practical purposes another posting incentive.
