Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> Ordering computer pieces!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-10-25 at 22:29:44
Okay, I'm going to finally recieve my birthday money(Which was on 8/10)... and it's time for me to buy some pieces for my new computer. I only have 250 to do it, and I already have a

Video card:
Radeon 9550, I know it sucks, but maybe once I get some money I'll pick up a 7600GT or a 7900GS if I can get some more money.

HDD:
IDE 160gb Maxtor, maybe for Christmas I'll get two 80 gb SATA2 drives and put them in RAID 0... I don't use that much space..

Case:
Some crappy case, like really crappy.. I don't even use the sidepanel on it, probably so little airflow in this case..(Damn IDE cables, I need to get some round ones.) Maybe later on when I get some money, I will get a nice, 30 dollar case... will work for what I need... I'm not looking for a flashy case, I would rather one with nice airflow and design.

DVD Drive:
Maddog, horrible brand, but whatever, it's what I have and it works for now.

I will replacing the PSU, memory, motherboard and CPU. I will take my old ones and set up a computer, using some of my extra stuff I got laying around in my house. I'll let my family use it as their computer smile.gif)

Anyway, the pieces I'm getting are..

Motherboard: ASRock 939Dual-VSTA Socket 939 ULi M1695 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16813157097 $68.99
I need support for an AGP card, with support for PCIe x16 later on
PSU: Sunbeam PSU-BKS580-US ATX 580W Power Supply - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16817709011 $23.99
Not the best PSU, but I trust that it won't crap out on me so soon. And if it does, hopefully it's within the warranty, or else I'm screwed tongue.gif
CPU: AMD Opteron 146 Venus 2.0GHz Socket 939 Processor Model OSA146BNBOX - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16819103598 $99.99
A lot of overclocking potential if I get the right stepping on it. I'm pretty sure CACJE is a good stepping. It would really suck if the highest I can get this thing is 2.2ghz... but hopefully it can at least get 2.6ghz with a stock fan..
RAM: Patriot Extreme Performance 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory Model PEP5123200LL - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820220018 $59.99
I don't really want to run my memory with a divider, it'll let me overclock a bunch more. I will probably get another 512mb stick at Christmas, so I can run this in dual channel. 512mbs is sad.gif, though.

EDIT: Also going to get this Round IDE cable

At least your present video card is better than mine... Don't think I'll ever upgrade my computer.

I want to upgrade my computer, but the parts I want to upgrade too are expensive.

Deathawk, start mowing lawns or something to get Intel Core Two (or something like that) processor.

Congratulations, the only brand up there I've heard of is AMD. It looks okay but I certainly wouldn't expect to get too much OCing on totally stock cooling.

Well, for Core 2 I'd have to get a good motherboard... which is 120-150 dollars... my motherboard is about half that.

ASRock is a "subsidary" or something of ASUS, and I'm 100% sure you know of ASUS.

Sunbeam doesn't really make PSUs, but from reviews of this PSU, it will do what I want, and for 23 dollars I can't really go wrong with the amps on the 12v rail(sort of high for a single rail and it's price) and the wattage..

In my opinion, Patriot makes some of the best DDR RAM... just from reviews and stuff though, but I've done some studying. They are good quality/pricing.

And you'd be suprised how much you can overclock with an Opteron. Especially if you get a good stepping, raise the voltage a little bit and you can get it to 2.7~ish easily.

Don't skimp on the power supply, get a solid, well known brand. I know it costs more, but in the long run you'll be happy that you got it, I've been through 3 cheap power supplies on my current computer, the first of which fried my motherboard when it died.
Just get a good one, power supplies are a really bad place to cut costs.

That's what people tell me, but I think this is a somewhat quality power supply. 580watts...25 amps on the 12v... good reviews, of both it and it's cousin product(Sunbeam 480w)... I really think I will get good performance from this one. I mean, there are more quality PSU's than just Antec.. not sure if anybody has found out yet though.

I think you should wait to upgrade. get a job or something. shovel driveways in the winter or work somewhere.

Wait to upgrade for what..? :\ I won't really have much more money, and I can't really afford a good core2+mobo and DDR2 RAM :\

EDIT: I think I'm getting an Opteron 148 instead, because 146 is out. I could get a 144 with 1gb of regular RAM, but I want high performance RAM so my overclock isn't held back.. all I need is a good stepping... and hopefully this motherboard is good enough for overclocking..
