Ok, scrolling through many threads I tend to see one thing occurring somewhat often. One person posts something that isn't about the thread, and is more directed to the member. Something around the lines of..
Person: Off Topic: ROFL thats funny jimmy! On Topic: We should... *yada-yada*
or
Person: OMG Rantent I love your sig! *More text*
This notes, do not really add anything to the conversation. (unless of course the second topic was about signatures.) I would really prefer these comments to be held in PM's.
Although sometimes the idea of sending a PM only to them defeats the purpose of saying the off topic note. For instance if you simply want other people to know that my sig rocks too, it wouldn't do any good to PM only me about it. And starting a new topic about that minor comment is just over the top.
So some of the time it IS ok to add these little notes, but for those replying to the side notes...
PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE NOTE THE TOPIC!
One or two is bearable, but when reading a topic I don't want to see so many off topic posts. Use a PM if you want to inquire about why another member said what they did on a side note... Leave the topic its dignity.
It works, but sounds a bit unfair that the first person gets to post something off-topic and other people don't, whether it be an original comment or a response.
Centreri I like your signature Only problem I have with that is when no part of their post is on topic, like, say I wanted to tell Centreri that his siggy is awesome. If I had it after this contribution, it'd be all right to me.
(No, I'm not going to compliment it.)
The way I see it, if a topic gets clogged with side conversations like that to the point of annoyance, the original point of the topic clearly isn't very interesting and thus it's time for a topic lock.
