Staredit Network -> Games -> What Makes A Game Good?

So what exactly makes you want to play a game after youve beaten it the first time? There are certain games that you can beat in a one hour sitting (I think it was Yoshis Story or something of that), and then there are games that youll always be playing (easy example: Tetris).

Well, those are the older games, and we're already a few years well into the next-gen gaming. Is it the multiplayer options? That allows you to have a constantly changing opponent, since you cant exactly read them like you would with the built-in AI. Perhaps gameplay? Just something about it thats some different from all the other lackluster games. Or maybe its just the want to be as complete and powerful ingame as you can?

There was another big item in addition to multiplayer that I really wanted to add, but its slipped my mind. closedeyes.gif

What are your thoughts on this? With the rush of sequels out, it seems that theyre currently running dry on ideas, so there would be some logic in keeping the players happy on select games.

EDIT: Just remembered, and it was so obvious, on this site too!
Ahem. In addition to multiplayer, could it be the mods? Having the ability to be able to change some aspects of the games so that while youre playing the same game, it has the feels and style of something different. Example: Half Life and Counterstrike. The mod on HL was so popular itself that they eventually used it to produce its own product, and led its way to its own sequel.

Replayability is good! Also being able to play it after you beat it! Diversity in the plot!

reasons to play:

it must be enjoyable. if it's not fun to play, whats the point of playing?

what we all find enjoyable is different of course. I like games with a lot of replay value and it's hard. but not too hard. wink.gif [Damn you OoT master quest!]

Multiplayer is very good for keeping playing games like SC.
A good editor or mod will also be good.

A challenging single player will work to.

Good game = a game that has innovative features and an excellent story-line.

Replayability comes in third... I guess.

good plot line is first.
the absence of bugs are better

I'm sort of a narcisst, it's hard to find anything I actually like. I like older games. Theres less room for error in those wink.gif

Agree 200%. Innovation people, it's not about doing the same thing that's been done for years, it's about creating new areas that haven't been journeyed before... Look at the super nintendo, systems before that had boops and bleeps, but not complex midis of the snes. People scoffed at the feature, saying it's just a gimmick, but today, this unrecognized feature is a STANDARD. I truly believe the new ideas, make the game because look at movies such as the matrix, the reason we were amazed because we had never seen that kind of movie before... now the sequels are disappointing because we already know what to expect...

Great games not only have good gameplay and features, but they introduce new ideas and boundaries that change the way we look at gaming forever.

I'd say the best thing in a game is the different types of game-play, and ways to do things. I.E. Strategy games, you can do it your own way, KOTOR you choose what you want to do, Fable, You can do anything tongue.gif, Half-Life+Mods: You can make your own mods, campaigns, mods for Multi-Player, Fun all around.

For me a good game is a game where i have full control over the characters attributes, and there is a good story. Multi-player makes the replay value a lot more than if it were just single player.

I like it when everytime you play its different. NOt like as in totally 100 percent different, i mean as hwo you can never play the same game twice.

In order of importance (my opinion)

1. Difficulty
2. Different Strategies can be used
3. Difficulty levels

What I like mostly is the Challenge Factor of a map. Not ridiculously hard next-to-impossible, but enough so that you'll have to remake a couple times to get used to the elements of the map. You can relate this to bounds, and I like to think for defenses too.

Making a defense good is the probability of it all. You could get a number of units or formations depending upon the map. High replay value is key to making a good map.

There's also a flip side, not many people like easily beaten maps with little effort put into balancing. e.g: Bunker Wars.

i think a game has to not crash when u play it pinch.gif
they also have to be fun, have high replayability, challenging, and good to play with other ppl in multiplayer, like maps with teamwork involved

You see, if the game's name is "Starcraft", you know for a fact that it's good. There you go. That's the best reason.

  • Difficulty
  • Replay
  • Mutliplayer in some cases
  • Music
  • Graphics, but in some games I don't care
  • Character and level design
