I've downloaded X-tra and was fooling around, attempting to see if it redid some of the StarCraft Campaign Editor programming to allow more than 1,650 units. I found out it didn't. Is there anyway to either switch the maximum number allowed, or just bypass the limit? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Using triggers, you can get up to 1700 units. But as far as I know, thats the limit.
I think there has been a thread similar to this before...
No there is no way on changing it unless your modding.
Meh. Alright. Thanks. I see no reason to go above that level unless I'm making an RPG, but I was just wondering.
Even with modding, it's impossible to go over the limit because it's built into the game engine.
Really? I was screwing with SCM Draft 2 and sprites and I put the Sprite max at like 5000 or something. I then put in a ton of sprites (I believe the number was 926) and the game played fine on b.net with everything intact. It would be so cool to put the unit max at like 3000 and have it work properly. I'll post back in like half an hour.
*Edit* I put a crapload of units in (dunno how many, but it was way over 1650) and when I tried to make the game, it simply said, "An error has occured." Still, I can save the map and such. It doesn't work for units but it seemingly works with sprites. I haven't encountered any problems with going over the sprite limit but you guys are all *hush hush* about it. What are some problems you have encountered?
Well, while I will be off-topic in my own topic, I've discovered a new question. Is there anyway to change the terrain in the middle of play? I want to have an explosion where it will be able to destroy some of my terrain. Is this possible, or a futile dream?

Probably a futile dream. Also, the 1650 unit limit is there to reduce lag and crap, so you shouldn't go over it anyways.
True. I'll just have to downsize.
You can't change terrain during a game, you used to be able to change sprites, but that isn't possible anymore, the only thing you can change and edit is units, and that is either very easy, or can get extremely hard...
It is hardcoded into the Starcraft Engine, on the limits of the unit count, and i believe there is a limit on Sprites as well, because Starcraft can only handle so many at one time, such as having 1600 battle cruisers, watch it, most of them won't fire, because they can't make the sprite action and therefore do not attack.

Same thing happens with valkryies when the map is maxed. They don't fire and are completely useless.
most unists are when they are w/o sprites
@person who placed 926 sprites: Try putting 1121 units and playing it, then 1122 if it works. I would suspect the game can only handle 2048 sprites but it might be 2047 because of the mouse.
Forgot to say: Units take sprite slots up too.
Sprites:
Units
Doodads
Sprite Pre-Placement
Sprite Attacks
Not:
Shadows
Terrain
Mouse Button
It should be 2048, not 255 like most things on it, because there is no 0 choice for it.
So say I had 1650 units. According to you, I'd still be able to put in about another 398 "sprites?"
Say I used the 255 sprite max. Would that mean that only ~150 units could actually attack at one given time? And when I modify the Unit Max in SCM Draft 2, could I put it up to 2048 and still be able to play it?
And I didn't think doodads themselves counted as sprites... only the sprite components like the tops of trees.
Could you please clarify what exactly counts as a sprite?

Valks become useless LONG before unit max is rached. Halo rockets take so many sprites...
Anything visible on the map is a sprite, except apparently shadows cause they're shared with their unit.

No, shadows are sprites. Look in BrooDat.mpq and look at all the grp's portaining to shadows. Each shadow is its own sprite.

I was going to add them, but refrained, ok i'll update the list then.
Sprites:
Units
Buildings
Doodads Parts
Sprite Pre-Placement
Sprite Attacks
Shadows
Maximum placement must be 2048, which sounds about right. Think about it, on those large maps, well it gets full very quickly, like diplomacy, and some units stop working, noticed that?
you guys will think im dumb but idk wut a sprite is can ne1 help me?

A sprite is a graphic displayed on a map. Units are srites. Doodads are sprites. Bullets are sprites. Any kind of changing image is a sprite.
i wish you could have at least 2000 lol XD

If you had 2,000 you wouldn't be able to attack with anything pretty much. Even more so if there were any doodads.
DT, u know what you're saying? Say I had 1650 Battlecruisers, with 1650 shadows... You realize that the "Sprite" count under your theory would make 1650 battlecruisers = 3300 sprites. And you guys have been saying that the maximum is 2048. WTF, can we get one definitive explanation from like Bolt or something?
*Edit* When you say doodad you don't mean stuff like bridges and stuff do you?
The tops of trees and stone pillars are sprites, the bases of them are terrain tiles.
And um...Why in the hell would you need so many units in a map?
