Staredit Network -> Terrain -> DevliN's OMG UPDATED Mac Terrain
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2006-11-14 at 14:02:17
I figured I'd make a topic showing off the terrain I've made so far with IanMM's XEdit (the only terrain editor for Mac). Realize that all of these are done using a GUEdit-like editor, so I'm not able to add sprites or even copy/paste terrain - its all from scratch. biggrin.gif

DRAGON EGG RPG

So I'm making an RPG called Dragon Egg RPG for this month's contest. Here's the terrain I've done so far for it. Its nothing special, I'm still just practicing.

Nice, though I see several would-be-easy-to-fix mistakes wink.gif But since this editor is probably not that user-friendly yet (never tried GUEdit terrain), I believe you really did a great job happy.gif

Basically think of GUEdit as being like StarForge without any features other than the terrain stuff, no undo button, no brush feature, and only 1x1 tiles can be made.

EDIT:
I'm not blind, I can see the blockyness - so there's no need to leave comments telling me that they are blocky (for future reference). tongue.gif

Is the tile palette about the same as in SF/SCMD2? Or asked differently: Can you create tile-palette-only-terrain as quick in this editor as in SF/SCMD2 (really only using the palette in SF/SCMD2)?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2006-11-14 at 14:45:59
Basically the editor is only the tile palette like the one in SF and your terrain. There are no other features other than placing 1x1 tiles.

Fix the roof, it's easy. Building roof goes like this:

[1][2][1][2]
[1][2][1][2]

[1] is one tile and [2] is another. Just find the starting tile.([1] or [2])

Yeah that was an accident. Since we don't have an undo feature, I was too lazy to go back and fix it. I will, though, no worries. happy.gif

Very nice. Glad to see my editors getting some use. No it's not too user friendly but I'm working on that minimap right now.
But I like the mountain one better since it is less block and mor realistic.

So why did you post it then? It only consists of blockiness, and there's nothing else to discuss about the pictures really, except that the ramp thingy is an old blend aswell as the building.

There is no reason to become mean. Although I would prefer mac terrain discussion in a single tread myself. But since I'm not a mod anymore... pinch.gif

Because they were my first attempts at extended terrain. People post their first attempts all the time, so why can't I?

Thanks for the support, DEAD.

DevliN, it's alright, just not very creative. Seeing as you're on a mac I'll leave the blockiness alone tongue.gif. The second one I think is kind of cool, I wouldn't mind walking by that in a map smile.gif.

Haha thanks. I realize the first isn't very original, and I just now saw Kenoli's ramp that stops at the top so I suppose neither is the second. I did modify the second a bit so that you can actually go into that cave-like area.

Can you go from the bottom ramp to the higher up one in the 2nd picture?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2006-11-14 at 19:16:14
That's what I was attempting to do, but I was having trouble blending the top of the first ramp with the bottom of the second (like having the top of the first ramp remain the dark brown lower dirt color).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by NerdyTerdy on 2006-11-14 at 19:19:33
Don't people use ruins a lot because they are sorta that colour?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2006-11-14 at 19:33:45
Yeah, but I'm still testing my ramp-to-ruins blending. I'm not too good at it, for now (obviously biggrin.gif). When I do get it, however, I'll put an update in my first post.

Heres what I came up with in like 5 minutes it isnt too good yet but its a basic idea of how to blend the ramp into the flat

Pretty good terrain, yes it's blocky, but it's very nice for a mac tongue.gif
I don't think I'll ever quit saying this, Starcraft HATES mac users
good job though, although, on the roof, did you select that rooftop from the terrain pallete, or does that editor make you use the terrain pallete/doesn't automatically try to make it look natural.

Naw the roof he just used one tile. You know Devlin you could have started it in staredit.

Wow, I for one can tell how much time that would have taken. Good Job!!!

Also, I like the tower idea. A lot. shifty.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2006-11-15 at 03:53:19
The watch-tower type thing? I have never seen that before, so I thought I'd give it a try - but I was told it was unoriginal. Oh well.

Oh and I updated with my progress on the jungle terrain.
