Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Computers and Technical -> LAN via router

Is it possible to set up a LAN connection between two computers that are both hooked to the same router? I've got a printer that would be easier to utilize than saving word documents on save file and then downloading them on the other computer.

Oooh...I'm not sure, but you need to go to 'My Network Places', and setting up a home network...you may get the internet via the same router, but I don't think you'll be able to share files like that.

I tried sharing files between two computers on the same network, but I've never gotten it working...oh well, at least you know where to start...

Explain it to me on AIM later today.

If they are connected to the same router you should be able to set them up basically in the same way as if the router wasn't there, except that you will probably not need to assign IP addresses manually for the computers.

A lot of new printers have wireless connections, which makes hooking them up to an 802.11b/g network a piece of cake. However, I'm not a big network guy so I can't tell you how to remotely print a document from another machine. Sorry!

I've done A LOT with networking. About 3 years ago I needed a way of getting internet to my computer from my moms. Now I run use a router to send a wireless signal up to my room where my USB Wireless Adapater picks up the signal. I use a static ip system for this. I find using static ip's much more full-proof that dynamic ip's.

I used a really long cord and a router. In fact I only use routers to it for future flexibilty of adding more computers.
Connect both computers to the router and they should be able to detect eachother immediately via dynamic Ip address(although I prefer to override it with a static).

The computer that connects to the printer will have to be share the printer.(Find the printer via control panal and right click on it and click on share printer).
OR you can
You can also go to your Network Connections folder, click on Set up a home or small office network and go through those steps and then click on "Share printer" when your given the chance. You'll only have to run that on the computer that is connected to the printer.

The other computer should detect the printer.

why do I hate dynamic ip's? From sharing the internet and printer detection i've had hundreds of random errors that have no cause and idk how the hell I fix them..they seem to fix themselves(I still take the credit). I've never had a problem using Static Ip Addresses.

^ Another option is to have router-assigned static IP addresses if your router supports it. smile.gif (probably called a fixed DHCP lease or something like that)
