On my new
gaming rig, I started playing THQ's Company of Heroes (I just bought it today). With the specs mentioned there, I average 95 fps at a resolution of 1680x1050 with all of the eye candy turned up (surprisingly, the only antialiasing option is on/off).
The game is incredibly beautiful for a RTS. Of course, it's not quite as jaw dropping as say Oblivion at full settings, but it's very beautiful nonetheless. It is easier to compare this game to other World War II games instead of other RTS games. CoH looks almost akin to Call of Duty 2 graphically instead of say the original Call of Duty. Water reflections are vivid, ripples are present, and particle effects are just downright amazing. Sound is intense with explosions mixing with bigger explosions, ambient explosions and gunfire booming across the background, and soldiers screaming and swearing as they fight the enemy.
The gameplay is miles ahead of every other RTS I've played. No matter how much you dig in, a well thought out strategy can defeat it. Battles are intense, and at times you feel quite overwhelmed, but your units have this simply incredible AI that replaces a lot of the micro control prevalent in earlier RTS games like StarCraft. You still need a ton of minute control, but actions such as intelligently diving behind cover are taken care of. This is the first game I've played where once the battle begins (and it does within a minute or so of the beginning of every map), the action does not let up until one team is annihilated.
