I think people need to be tolerant and not cry over somebody saying Merry Christmas. Dear lord, a person just said it, now my skin will burn into a crisp because somebody just told me their beliefs. I don't go insane on somebody when they say Happy Hanukkah, I respect what they believe in, even if I don't. I personally say Merry Christmas insteada of Happy Holidays since it's Christmas I celebrate, Kwanzah was made up by some college professor in the 60s anyways.

Well first of all Christmas has abosultely nothing to do with Christianity. Know one knows when Jesus was born. The holiday was first thought up with the roman pagans celebrating the winter solstice. And from then the day 25 was borrowed from the Babylonians. So Christmas is in fact pagan.

I live in Canada and I don't care about how you can be charged for saying merry christmas. I do not celebrate christmas (I think christmas sucks and it can burn ) so just leave it as happy holidays. Who cares about the merry christmas. It's just a couple of words. It's not like its going to change your life.

People choose to relate Christmas to Christianity, so yes, now they do relate because people choose to make them so.

Seriously? One would get charged for saying Merry Christmas? What kind of government would charge its people for saying Merry Christmas?

No, it isn't. Being able to say 'merry Christmas' is part of free speech. However...

...I do not agree with that and in fact I am all for separation of church and state.

Actually, his statement to that effect is incorrect. The canadian government has not yet made it illegal to say 'merry Christmas'. However, it does sound like just the sort of 1984-like thing a government would like to do.

i'm not saying canadian government but where i live.. (My municipality)
and this country was formed on a christen society so it should stay that way..
i have not issues with other religions but they should respect if they are coming into a christen society then learn to adapt.

It doesn't sound like such a ridiculous law as the banning of saying "merry christmas" is very imminent anywhere.

The idea is from communism. Political correctness, a idea that an individual should not speak its mind, but the society deciding what to think for them. Canadians are truly commie. No offense in direct.

I agree. The United States isn't even christian state. It has no national religion, and it obviously doesn't have Christians running around killing non believers.

Yes. It's a Christian state. lol.

And by the way Canada was actually founded both the english and the french. Protestants was a major group. And germans also came to Canada. Canada was really an open country that was also not found by the french, english and the germans but also by scottish,Irish and other european nations. And must I repeat myself about the christmas thing.

But my last question is. Does anyone really give a d*m about the merry christmas or happy holidays. There just words. They don't change your life. In fact christmas and the other rubbage is done.

Well...not really much more than the United States does. They're both pretty bad (although admittedly not as bad as some countries).

Parts of the american constitution include freedom of speech too, but that hasn't prevented Bush from making burning the american flag illegal.

Exactly. Same thing with 'bad' words. Why get upset over words, anway? Especially when there are millions of people dying and living in poverty and so on to get upset over?

Jordan. Why do you post here if you dont give a damn? Thats what gets me the most.
green_meklar. If everybody in your school and even your mom started cussing and dissing at you for no reason, and didn't really treat you well... would you still be normal?

I don't really give a damn. But I like to call it Merry Christmas cause it sounds cooler than Happy Holidays.

Well to answer this question I'll answer in a non-flamish hypocritical way. First of all his post was a canadien conflict on those words.
QUOTE

As a natural born perfectionist (as you have seen in many of posts) I choose to lead myself sometimes into these topics but were I left off I'm a canadien and I don't think what he was saying was true. I went a convience store last week and when I was finish with my purchase the cashier said merry Christmas. The same she said to the others and I didn't mind. Now Mr.Chicken was saying you get charged for saying it and look, I didn't see a single person take out a cell-phone or report it to the police.

Now Lithium the reason why I posted was to correct him and tell people this topic has no scence in it.

Notice I said anyone not just myself as other people also have the same opinions. My main idea I was trying to tell everyone that nor do those 2 words effect anyone or is going to effect the world tomorrow. biggrin.gif

First, I don't believe I've ever said that I do in fact go to school. Second, if they start just using swear words as they are normally used, that is to say as interjections and emphasizers, it would have very little effect; I'm already quite used to that and have no particular problem with it. Insults, on the other hand, actually convey information about someone else's opinion of you, and are entirely a different thing from swear words. Not saying they should be outlawed either, it's just that you have more reason to respond negatively to insults than you do to mere swear words.

Advice everyone here would do well to heed. ;p

I always say Merry Christmas, by the way. I sent that out to all of the people I personally wished well this season. I mean, how often does someone complain that they were very offended by being given the wrong holiday wish? I would be very amused if someone wished me a happy holiday that I didn't celebrate.

You have every right to burn the flag, but remember. Time, place and manner. You can be jailed for burning one on private property or when it's a great interuption.

Living proof, let's do it some more! happy.gif

No but seriously, I told my friend merry christmas before we left for winter break. He got pissed at me and started chewing me out because he was Jewish and I knew it. I basically told him to shut up, with nice words of course. So sue me, maybe I shouldn't've done it that way, but really, its a blessing. I don't say it maliciously. People need to stfu over it.
