Hear it now and hear it loud.
Red2Blue's Almost All you need to know about the PSP Guide!Tah!
"The PSP is an
awsome buy only if you're the one to use it to it's fullest."
What that means?
You have to like listening to music, viewing pictures, playing games, and surfing the web, a lot...
I'm not talking, hey I 'kinda like music, hey I 'kinda like music, hey I 'kinda like games, or I 'kinda like surfing the internet. You have to really like it... So much that you have to have it with you everywhere all the time.
You have to like one of the four a lot essentially.
To my experience, the games on the PSP are varied, but specific. If you like rpg games, you're just gonna buy the rpg games; you'll never get an car game or a fighting game; rather, you aren't going to like it very much or play it very much. I am a very varied player when it comes to games, and to my experience... I find it hard to enjoy some of the games I bought.
GAMES:
In terms of games themselves, newer fighting games are almost impossible to play on the PSP as most of the more advanced fighting games like Guilty Gear are more or less, impossible to play as they are too honed on precision. Even Tekken Dark Ressurection is difficult to play and that game is already simple enough (some moves are impossible to do especially multi-press moves... say bye bye to King players). Streetfighter and Darkstalkers is your best bet for getting your fighting game's worth as they are simple and hold a lot of depth, not to mention it's impossible to foil such classics. But Tekken Dark Ressurection is the best fighting game currently.
Turn based games and RPG games work best on the psp, as they are entertaining and save a lot of battery... Not to mention, turn based and rpg games gives the PSP a Nintendo-aura feel as most of these games are much like the old nintendo advanced rpgs and turn based games... only with crazy gfx.
Shooters are fun, but they suffer from lack of L2 and R2 buttons which simplified the weapon selection. Socom is the best game. The online community is buzzing. Fun with the headset is probably one of the best and funniest things in the online scene. And victory dances... if you have played it you know what I mean. lol... classic.
Some sports games and action games are also alright, but they use a lot of the analog nub, that little flat circle thing that's supposed to emulate an analog stick. Some people play better on it, some people hate it to heck. Not to mention extended use damages the nub and area around it (leaves little scratches and engraved marks from those who press hard... thanks a lot little sis. :/).
BATTERY:
Battery life would be your biggest issue with the PSP, as some of the games will EAT up your battery so quickly. These include 3D intensive games that use textures and blurs. An average game will last you 2-4 hours. Take that for what it's worth. So if you really like 3D car games... you will definitely want to bring your charger with you.
Listening to music on the Memory Stick lasts roughly 4-5 hours and pictures 5-6 hours.
The biggest annoyance I have with the battery, is charging it and using it online---moreso... you can't charge it and play it online at the same time. If you're using the WLAN feature on your PSP, it wont charge no matter what you do. There's a cure however, if you use a carrying case with an external battery, you can charge the external battery and use it while playing online. Take that Sony!
DISPLAY:
It's bright clear... and often times, riddled with dead or stuck pixels. Wiki that if you don't know what they are. Make sure you get one that's clear of these... or pay the concequences of annoying dots in your game. Kinda bright in classrooms, avoid usage in there.
Almost PS2 quality gfx!
PROTECTION:
The screen is very sensitive. If you press with moderate force on the face of the screen, you run the chance of pressing against the LCD inside, and rupturing it or damaging it. Drop a book on it... and it's history. Drop it on the ground... and it's over.
The black outer-casing also breaks REALLY easily. Dropping it from about 3 feet is enough to shatter it completely. My friend dropped his off the table onto the tile floor and left a crack along the whole left side of it.
Also, people steal these things. Keep it safe, always check for it if you bring it to school. And above all, don't show it off. v_v...
Buy a case ffs. It's only 20-40 bucks and can save your PSP from a nasty fall.
EMULATION:
"Modifying" your PSP is what you need to do. I can't tell you how... but google will save the day. As I have to note... if you buy a new PSP at the store, chances are you will get one that cannot be hacked easily. Sony added a new protection software to the PSP. You can tell if you have this new protection by noting the gold letters along the backside of the psp umd board. I took a picture of mine to show you.
[attachmentid=22208]
If you have those gold letters you can't modify emulation the same way you can with one without the new protection. Though, if you don't really like old school games or arcade games you wont really miss it anyway as the emulation games will get old for you. Though, mario never gets old for me.
It's risky, but there's a new method for these new PSP's... GL as you run the chance of frying your psp or destroying the BIOS and thus wasting 200+ bucks.
In short, for emulation, if you want emulation, just get it used; check the used psp before you buy it and make sure you don't update to 3.01. You can't hack a 3.01 currently as there's no downgrader for it. Make sure it's 2.71.
The psp runs under 333mhz processor, which is albeit, a bit slow for today's standards, but amazing for the psp games. If you "modify" your psp you essentially turn it into a handheld computer. So... the 333mhz spec will follow you through all the emulations you run. meaning, some games that should work fine on your computer, will not work fine at all on the psp. Choppiness is expected. And not to mention, only certain emulators work on it. Also take into account that you have to downgrade your psp in order to run these emulators, which is a hassle.
The illegal version of the PSX emulator runs slow, but the legal versions that are offered for PS3 can be xferred to your psp, allowing you to play at pretty much legit quality. Damn you Sony. :/
That's all I have to say for now. All was written by me, look I took the picture too.
PSP is owned by sony.
INTERNET:
The internet is great, and works good on the PSP, the problem is, is that it cannot support javascripts very well and it cannot fit really big websites on the screen even using just-fit or smart-fit. You can view up to three webpages at a time. Typing is AWFULLY HARD. You have to type in every key manually which as anyone should know, takes a long time. I think there's a keyboard attatchment. I donno, it would be nice. Other than that, it can go to any site and any place you want like a normal computer can, even if the site is displayed poorly.
