If you dont have a case or just take off the side panal on your computer do you still need to have a fan?

Not really, unless you're talking about your processor fan, or GPU fan/heatsink. You don't need much airflow if your side panel is completely off.

I don't know too much about it, so personally I'd leave the fan in just in case.

I dont know if its the processor fan but its in the back on most computers by the mouse port and keyboard port

No. That's just the rear fan. The CPU fan is the one that is on the motherboard. If you have an older computer(really old).. it might just be a heatsink.

This is an old picture.... but anyway, the CPU fan goes directly ontop the the CPU, which is placed into the CPU socket.. so do you have a fan around there on your motherboard..?

This is the back of my computer im talking about the top right fan I guess its called the rear fan

That is the fan for the power supply and is not one that is attached to the computer case; you don't want to be messing with that unless there is something wrong with it and you don't mind voiding your power supply's warranty by opening it up. BTW, you shouldn't even be opening up your power supply unless you really know what you're doing.

The whole point of this is that the fan doesnt work well and sometimes my computer shuts off from overheating I think so im wondering if by taking off the side panal maybe it will stop it sortof or I could just run a fan by it

If your computer is already suffering from overheating and stuff, yes, taking the side panel off the case can't really cause any harm

Do power supplies even generate a lot of heat? Mine is cool to the touch. I'd check your CPU's fan and make sure that's working properly. You may also need to buy some compressed air to "dust" your PC's innards. Okay, please don't actually dust your PC - that would probably bombard it with static electricity left and right. Just spray it with compressed air.
