Awhile ago, we had a discussion on how to combine the forums down...
I come back and see they have multiplied somewhat however...
Let's resume this talk.

Just because I don't like looking at two pages...

HmmmMmmmm. Take a hard look at "Editing (Staredit Related)". Forum seems useless. Why not kill it? Let's do this a little at a time.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Syphon on 2006-12-31 at 10:44:36
Merge Light Discussion and Serious Discussion, they already have similar threads.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Doodle77(MM) on 2006-12-31 at 11:01:39
Light Discussion basically only contained tech threads, but now we have a forum for that.
And keep Modding discussion, there would be nowhere for all those threads to go.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2006-12-31 at 12:13:31
Lite Discussion seems to provide a space for topics that shouldn't go in Misc or Serious Discussion. I would keep it.

I would also keep "StarCraft Editing Related", too.

Once we get a reviews system up and running, we won't need Reccomend and Review.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2006-12-31 at 12:20:19
I say we do it like this:
  • Website
  • Starcraft
  • Miscellaneous
Boom done. Everything consolidated. Muahahah!

Lite Discussion has less serious topics than Serious Discussion, which relates to current events and contemporary issues, but more serious topics than Null.

Agreed. Notice Recommend and Review disappeared off my list? wink.gif

Editing whatever in my list is the consolidation of all the "general" forums. Anything you want to talk about that has generally to do with editing, but doesn't fit in anything specific goes there.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-01 at 02:42:29
So why keep starcraft general editing?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2007-01-01 at 03:05:16
Because there needs to be a place for discussion on generic StarCraft editing that the other forums don't account for.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2007-01-01 at 03:09:46
I was wondering if that couldn't be another Misc forum somehow, though. I mean, as it is a generic discussion forum related to the primary purpose of this site, it seems fitting to include it with the other generic forums.

The showcase forum is important. It gives a place to formally present and discuss recently finished maps. Trying to do that through the DLDB makes it like drinking through a fire hose, and the comments feature just doesn't replace having a thread. I wouldn't be against a function of the DLDB to forward to a release thread and visa versa (instead of comments), similar to my old suggestion of integrating tutorials with the help forums. Mostly that stuff sounds v5-ish, though.

Okay.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2007-01-01 at 05:55:00
Well, personally I don't like discussing about a completed map if it is truly complete.
I'd suggest something more of like a promotion system, where new maps (being under a month old or so) could be nominated to be showcased. But it wouldn't be limited to simply three maps, they would remain until they ran to the bottom of the list, or if they were nominated again by someone else.

Or something of that nature.

I guess I just like the map spotlight and would like to see it broadened.

UMS : Showcase :: Discussed at length.
Website : Staff : Record Vault :: If it can be made standard procedure. Subforums never took up that much room anyway.
Website : Staff : Inner Sant :: The purposes for which I saw never really materialized. Agreed.
Website : Updates :: Agreed.

-Graveyard and Ideas belong together
-Concepts really should be a General forum, for innovations in all areas of SC creation.
-Team projects dies?
-'nother melee forum needed
-Mod Discussion should be incorporated into the General discussion.
-I don't see the point of killing Null subforums. Subforums take up next to no room, so I've never been bothered by them.
-I agree with merging Creative.

It would look a lot more structured and neat with less forums, and more subforums. (In some cases.) How about something like...

Updates and the Staff lounge are moved to a subforum of Website Discussion, because that's what they are.
Comings and Goings replaces Welcomes, and is also used for departures and absences.
FAQ and Regulations is no longer a forum, but a link to the page.
The Melee, UMS, and Generic Editing sections are merged into a more defined section.
Concepts and Ideas are merged.
Modding section is expanded, and now contains a general discussion (Good for idea talk.) And the Mod team's forum.
Other is bascilly rearranged and Videos and Movies and Music & Sound are merged into AV Club, since neither are too active.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-01 at 17:23:07
A couple problems with that.

-Subforums totally kill any chance a forum has of being active.
-You destroyed the melee section.
-Welcome is not as important as anyone pretends. I like it at the almost very bottom.

Only changes I could possible like are the first category.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-01 at 18:09:44
I agree... subforums suck.
Plus I might do something to make the forum index not so big... eventually...

How many times to I have to differentiate to you on MSN between Concepts and Ideas. They are not the same thing.

Concepts is innovations and systems, ideas is map storylines, half-finished maps, and the like. In that way, Ideas coincides with Graveyard and can be thus merged. Other than that:

-Long names are great. More to click on. Who says you have to quote the forum name when you move topics? The only way maplantis gets away with short names is using size 3 bajillion font.
-General SC should go on top of the departments, not below.
-Modding Discussion simply isn't needed. If you can have both a general discussion forum and the aforementioned Innovations (Concepts) forum in General SC, you can ditch the Modding Discussion. It isn't exactly used anyway.

Otherwise, I like it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2007-01-01 at 22:58:33
Once? I never said Ideas and Concepts were the same. An idea is either in production (Production) or an innovation (TheoryCraft). Graveyard is for maps deemed unfinished by their creator. You can take those. You don't just steal someone else's idea.

I wouldn't want to have to sort through all the other "Innovation" topics to find mapping/modding ones.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-02 at 00:37:46
Uhh, what other topics would there be? An innovations forum would be for mapping/modding innovations, not science ones....

I always saw Ideas as a place to give your ideas out to the community. It's like graveyard, but it doesn't necessarily have to have a half-finished map applied to it.

Ideas (and Graveyard): Map ideas not in production, graveyard maps, other potential map/mod ideas that aren't complete concepts/innovations.

Production Forums (ums/melee/mods): All projects actively in production than expect to be completed.

Concepts & Innovations: Developed new systems in mapping or modding that have been developed and are now being released. Potential dabblings in new systems would probably be better suited for Ideas, but could be a crossover subject.
