In the Ideas forum, with a nice "I don't intend to use this idea" in your post. Or "I AM going to use this idea" in a post if you do plan on using it.

I think that we should run merging Creative by the people first and do that. I'll post up a topic in Feedback.

Kk.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-04 at 03:52:04
Idk moose... I'm failing to see the logic as why we should keep ideas and graveyard seperate. Ideas seems to be a rather stupid forum. "So I got this map idea... you kill things and lol." I'll have to take a harder look at the ideas forum though.

Team should die. I think. Maybe.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2007-01-04 at 04:45:19
I don't know about teams, as I'm thinking it might be useful to have a space to advertise/organize people for map or mod productions separate from the project threads themselves.

Ideas and graveyard should definitely be combined, though. Call it the Junkyard forum. tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-04 at 08:43:34
I kinda like the "Junkyard". In my mind right now, I see ideas being a forum where you can post ideas for maps for other people to take, that's basically it
Graveyard is just one step above that... an idea for a map that actually took some form, but posted for other people to take.

In that mindset, they are basically the same forum.

The next step is map in production and then released map (which you have seperate for ums and together for melee... (and that's 98% logical).

Ideas, as in... theory... would go in "Concepts and Innovation". Right?

Case closed on this?

As far as Teams... hmmm... something can be done if it needs to be kept in some way, I'm sure of it.

-

If we merge creative, in v5 I think I'll go with my idea for topic tags, pending feedback from you guys. The idea behind it is to categorize topics... such as, when creating a topic in creative, you can have a tag like: Writting- or Music-.
I'm not sure if I exactly like it myself. But like, in the assistance forums, a tag can be added outside the topic like Solved- so it doesn't actually become part of the topic... or in feedback Bug Report- or Feedback-.

Also, considering the merge, topic quality needs to be taken a step up.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-04 at 10:35:36
Hmm, topic tags would be an interesting thing to try.

As far as deleting anything else, I'd rather re-sort the forums as we're suggesting first, and then we can continue talking about deleting. I agree the the Team forum is inactive, but the least we can do is run it by the community first.

I think what Moose sees the Ideas forum as is a pre-production map forum, where people get input on ideas before they put them into production. Or at least that's what I think Moose thinks.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-04 at 11:09:11
Well they are both highly inactive... ESPECIALLY the graveyard. No active topics what-so-ever. People can still throw pre-production topics in this forum, why not, it's not like anyone uses it for other reasons. I'm sure a fitting name could be thought of for "Help me with my idea / Here's my idea, take it / Here's my map, take it". We could just call it Ideas... because something uncompleted is just that, just an idea. It's up to the next person to finish the generalized idea, I'm sure if I picked up a map, I would craft it to my own likings instead of follow 100% what the orginial author intended. Either graveyard gets combined or it gets deleted.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-04 at 18:44:11
I'd like to see it combined, but you'll have to convince Moose of that.

We don't even have much support for merging the Creative Forums. I think that we should focus more on the best organization, not mashing stuff together simply because we've decided that there are "too many" forums. We ended up with "too many" forums because these topics needed to be seperated due to people's varying interests. Because there were a lot of different topics in one place that splitting it off made it easy. Because people looking for one thing would no longer have to sift through tons of unrelated posts to find one that's related (my reluctance to get rid of Modding General Discussion, to lump together mapping and modding, combining those Creative forums, or Ideas & Graveyard). That isn't a bad thing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-05 at 00:25:57
I only look to delete and combine forums when the fester from inactivity.

For now I suggest we let Ideas and Graveyard be, but I have to agree with IP's merge somewhat, or perhaps make a Junkyard forum for all released concepts and allow topics with ideas that people plan to produce in the UMS Production forum.

I'd like to merge Creative, and I haven't seen anyone oppose it. There is little or no activity in each forum on a weekly basis. Same is true for Modding Discussion.

Other than that, we can reorganize now and delete later.

I don't really think that it's good to have modding and mapping concepts lumped together.

Team is weak, yes, but it's used by the people who need it. Somewhere to collaberate is important, and I don't really know what other forum to put that in.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-05 at 01:06:44
Innovation is all fields is rare enough it deserves to be mixed. How often do you think breakthroughs happen?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Doodle77(MM) on 2007-01-05 at 22:34:49
Graveyard and Team should be subforums of Editing, I want MGD to stay, but you seem to generally disagree with me.

QUOTE(Doodle77(MM) @ Jan 5 2007, 11:34 PM)
Graveyard and Team should be subforums of Editing.

Probably. Nobody is going to suddenly wander into editing. Only the people who use it will it.

Graveyard was a subforum until a week or two ago. I thought it being a forum would get more attention, which obviously isn't true. It can go back to being a subforum.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-06 at 02:05:08
It doesn't seem properly organized at all as a subforum.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-06 at 03:06:07
I think it's logical graveyard and ideas can be merged...
But can we (or I) justify merging graveyard, ideas, and general editing?

Now, outside of the box, one idea would be to split the forum's main groups (Website, UMS, Melee, Mods, General Editing, Other) into seperate pages. Seperate pages as in AJAX pages... as in not loading the entire page, but just the forums under the main groups. This would allow: bigger descriptions, bigger link text, more main forums without making it look hideously cluttered. In such a system, we could split creative into main forums as it wouldn't add an extra 5 forums in a huge list, it'll add 5 forums in a smaller list.

~~~Logical Reasoning~~~
"Other" being selected in this ajax setup.
Not really. If Moose will even merge ideas and graveyard, I say start with just that.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-06 at 11:25:27
Hmm, my main worry is that people dislike clicking through more pages than they have to.
I think we should be able to leave everything on the front page; I think people would rather fly their mousewheel than deal with extra navigation. As for bigger link text, I suggested to Moose that we make the entire box with the forum description in it a link with no hover effect.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2007-01-06 at 15:38:57
That's a good idea (box link).
Anyone else on the thought of a split forum page?
And clicking to reach a new forum section... would it make that much of a difference compared to endless scrolling to get to the "other" section?
