Staredit Network -> Terrain -> First trying of my life!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by payne on 2007-01-18 at 03:43:19
Ok, this yesterday night were the first I ever touched an important part of map making : the terrain... but, instead of making my Diablo II : Lord of Destruction's terrain, I decided to practice myself a little...
So, here is what I've done in 4 hours of total concentration in the Tile Setup Index of SCMDraft, be indulgent :

user posted image -> That sucks!
user posted image -> I like my houses... they could be utilised for a Risk or a Diplomacy game!
user posted image -> I decided to do a pyramid with the kind of "house" in rock and with a hole in the center.
user posted image -> A mix of the pyramid, the houses and the statues (scuse me for the statues... I know it was stupid... but pressing Ctrl+Z [...])
[In your note, try to forget the statues]

Here we are... Gimme individual notes of each try... thanks!

user posted image -> With what did I worked? (some that are there hasn't been utilised)

P.S. It's my first time that I do these type of terrain... don't forget it!

Alot of it is pretty damn blocky but by your fourth picture, i can tell that if you fix up some blends, and do some minor spriting it would make a great screen shot.

Also:
Always disable grid when taking screen shots.

Do you have some hints for me? I like doing that... it's cool!
First of all... how to make it NOT blocky?
And for the rest... tell me pro's hints!

isnt your D2:LoD project going to be a modded map?(since your requiting modders)
why not just take the terrain from diablo?

Wow... calm down, we won't reproduce all the terrain of Diablo! But yup, we gonna make all we can to make it as perfect as we can!
You good at terrain modding?

How not to make things blocky: Find tiles that blend. Find tiles that have the same edges and can make patterns. Thats a basic that ISOM terrain is built apoun and is used in extended. We dont just throw random things ontop of eachother, thats just plain silly. Its about what fits together, like a puzzle.

Is there some pre-do tileset of terrain that can be mixed?

I dont understand this completely but let me give this a shot:
There are template maps, which have extended terrain on them that you could look at and modify.

By using SCMDraft's tileset index feature, we usually can find a lot of blends. Try that before using templates as you dont want to get dependant on them.

To become a better terrainer, you just need experience. It's like everything else. Lot's of practice is good. You might also want to add a few sprites.

Ewww... I hate sprites!
But.. I did used the SCMDraft's TileSet Indexed... I don't get your point... maybe because I'm bad in english! biggrin.gif

Very nice, the pyramid was cool, perhaps you could find a way to blend the middle and sides a little better?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by T-a-r-g-e-t on 2007-01-24 at 08:10:36
wow the lost city was really nice! what are your ideas for it? are you going to produce a map out of it?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by payne on 2007-01-24 at 17:21:52
Well... that was my first trying in terraining... but now that you talk about it... an RPG could be cool with that pyramid... except it's blocky!
I need someone to blend it!

I quote that. But I'll give an exception, because it is your first try. And because I'd never be able to do anything better. Good first try.

I'd say try blend it yourself, search around the terrain pallet and try tiles that you find similar and fitting to the whole pyramid.
