You can get good protection if you know what u are doing. Use wikipedia and read about security (ports, services, routing...). I was connected directly to the internet (PC to DSL Modem) without any firewall or virus scanner for many years, i never had any problems. Now i just got a HW Router because i needed WLAN and a gateway.

And if u just want to be save and have no interest in security (meaning the detailed knowledge), then i think u will be okay with a HW-Router including firewall and port-forwarding. I got a linksys (WRT54GL). It's not very expensive, easy to configure, and has an open-Source firmware based on linux.

Ad-Aware and Norton Anti-Virus 2005
Spybot Search And Destroy

I dont use ad-aware but maybe you might like it.

I dont use a firewall, you dont particularly need one if you're behind a router. What you do need is to use Firefox.

Browser: Firefox (anything but IE, in fact)
AntiVirus: AVG Free Edition
Anti-spyware: Spybot SD
Firewall: Comodo Firewall Pro (Free but you have to register your email). You could also use Sygate but it's no longer supported because Norton bought it.

All of the programs suggested by CaptainWill are at the top of their respective categories. However, you might want to try out Avira's AntiVirus PE (If AVG's interface bothers you) and supplement Spybot with Ad-Aware Personal Edition.

So does windows. As i said, you dont need a firewall unless you're not behind a router.

Software and hardware firewalls together is good, though. And the fact that they have a firewall and it updates isn't really why Macs are safe... Try a better kernel happy.gif and lack of victims.

Hmm, if you want a free anti-spyware program that actually updates it self automatically, rather than only when you tell it to, there are also other alternatives. For example, if you are on Windows XP or newer, there is Windows Defender (by Microsoft), which has been rated well in magazine reviews I've seen.

BTW, Comodo Firewall "Pro" (Pro was added to the name in the newest version) no longer requires registration or activation.

Well if you're going to switch OS for safety, go with Linux.

Some "registry cleaner/fixer" programs will just cause problems.
