Recently I was looking through my collection of Pink Floyd songs and found 'Echoes,' which was a song I'd never really listened to before. I turned up the volume and sat through it. It was pretty amazing, but 16 minutes long (I later found out that this is the 'short' version of the song tongue.gif ).

It would be impossible to show you the greatness of this song without having you listen to it, but I'll post the lyrics, which I think are quite beautiful, though possibly pretentious.

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks and no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

I love it though I guess it isn't for everyone.
What are your favourite Pink Floyd songs?

Time and Shine on you crazy diamond are my favorite songs. Sometimes it's great to listen to those on a sunny and fresh Saturday morning.

As some know, Pink Floyd is my favorite band ever. I have all their albums: Relics, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, Ummagamma, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, The Works, The Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Animals, Obscured by Clouds, Wish You Were Here, and any others I forgot.

Echoes is definitely one of my favorites. My favorite song and album is Wish You Were Here. Next being Dark Side of the Moon, where I enjoy Time, Brain Damage, and Eclipse. Then the Wall, mainly In the Flesh?, Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2, Comfortably Numb, and Run Like Hell. Probably my least favorite though would be Obscured by Clouds, with only two songs a truly enjoy: Childhood's End and Free Four.

Pink Floyd has definitely been one of my biggest inspirations to compose music just because of how experimental they were.

Wow, your collection is even bigger than mine. I actually quite like Obscured By Clouds. I wasn't expecting anything too great because it's a movie soundtrack, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I still think it would be great if they did one last tour as a whole band. Like they did at Live 8. I would buy a ticket instantly.

You'd think so, but as far as I know, Waters and the rest of the band now are very bitter towards each other, so I doubt there would be any reunion. It would still be neat, and likewise I would buy a ticket as quickly as possible.

Yeah, it's shame that Gilmour and Waters were so competitive with each other for control over the creative output of the band.

It's also very clear from the sound of the albums who was the dominant band member in its production.

The first couple of albums, like The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, were dominated by Syd Barrett. After that, things became more collaborative, culminating in Meddle where you can see that everyone had a strong influence. Then there's DSOTM and Wish You Were Here, where Waters' influence on the lyrics and themes is becoming apparent, but there's still a co-operative feeling, especially in the latter album. Animals and The Wall are so dominated by Waters that it's not even funny - The Wall is essentially about him and how his father was killed in WW2 when he was very young (something he's always been very bitter about). Of course, he left the band soon after and PF's last two full albums have been very Gilmour-influenced - melodic and airy, but without the edge that Waters provided.

Pink Floyd is part of my top 3 bands!
With Led Zeppelin and Rush surrounding.
Did you listened to the SONG 'Echoes' long version? About 23 minutes! AMAZING SONG! PUT IT ON HALLOWEEN!

Hey, know what!?
Around 5 months ago, Waters was at MONTRÉAL (where I live...). My father expected to buy us a ticket (around 300$ each!) but he finally decided to NOT! Why? Because he has though that I would prefear my stupid cinema activity at my dumb f***ing school! I used to listen to quite a bit of Floyd when I was little. (Namely, The Wall.)

But I have since moved on, and no longer really listen to any of his material. closedeyes.gif

Wish you were here is my favourite song. I know it backwards on guitar. It's not very hard though. That's the problem. Else, I like The Wall songs, and Dark Side of the Moon (After all, it's a classic).
