Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> Say NO to the OSMAP discussion war
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2007-01-28 at 10:59:46
It's funny how almost the entirety of the people who greatly support OSMAP or are greatly against it, and of those people who say that it should be banned/used by everyone don't see the major flaw in their argument.

Those against OSMAP say that they have the right to decide who has access to your map.

Those in favor say that they have the right to modify and open maps.

The thing is, that everyone has the right to take their own path. Just give up on the discussion and deal with it. You, nor I or any other person can dictate whether OSMAP will or will not be used, despite all the efforts you can make. There is always someone out there, who doesn't even know that you exist, or that even this discussion exists that will use OSMAP and open up yours or protect his own maps. There are many numerous people like this.

So what if SEN doesn't support OSMAP and Maplantis does? Why should you do what some guy behind a computer who manages a site says?

I could've taken sides with OSMAP and possibly had a position at Maplantis, or I could've been more involved here and I'd still be Staff.

Choose your own path, it doesn't matter what other people do or say. Just ignore the OSMAP war and do what really matters, self satisfaction.

If you come here to defend or support OSMAP, then please do not do so in this thread. This thread is AGAINST THE DISCUSSION THAT OSMAP HAS BROUGHT.

The point behind this post is to just forget about this discussion that has separated a great number of people in the past. I've been against the whole Staff/Admins a few times and I still formed part of it, because we had a common goal, to improve SEN.

Here we also have a common goal, to improve mapmaking as a whole.

I think, therefore I map.

And some people's path is to needlessly argue about OSMap. You have no point. The debate was about ethics, not about whether or not it's possible.

If you have to resort to personal attacks, there's nothing left to debate about.

The OSMap discussion is long dead, but who am I to say flogging dead horse wasn't fun? w00t.gif

Who are you to censor what we can and cannot debate on? It doesn't matter whether or not anyone supports OSMAP, but I certainly feel they should support free discussion. Participation in such discussions is not forced and you're certainly free to say "no" to your own involvement (and only your own involvement).

Moose is right. As far as I know, you can post pretty much what you want in these forums. And what are forums for, if not debate?

Its not that OSMAP shouldn't be debated. Its just that, like many debates, it turns in to fickle name-calling and childish banter.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Golden-Fist on 2007-01-28 at 12:06:38
I don't see what the big discussion is. People know where to find OSMAP, they'll use it if they want. No one can stop them, and no one can force others to use it. You guys can keep the discussion but it's not going to solve anything. The two sides will always be in favor of the side they chose so it'll just be bickering for 8+ Pages.

That's like saying "You've never run a country before, so your vote doesn't matter!"

This debate affects all members of the community, whether they map or not.

Community eh? Ok, let's look how much good the osmap has gave to the community...
» Countless threads full of argues, flames and spam.
» Random attacks and hate from 1 member to another.
» Separation of the community.
» (U) has left SEN.
» General disrespect in between members that were fine with each other before.

Well done.

I'm tired of these half-assed osmap freak discussions. But you stated only like 1/5 of osmap's flaws. So if you don't go by all 100%, keep you little mouth shut.

If you don't have anything logic to say, shut up.

LW dirty lies and backstabs people?

But of course nobody is expecting that from one like you..

your opinion in this matter is worth exactly nothing..

I don't just pull things out of my ass when I'm involved in a debate, unlike some people.

Each line is a different quote, authors have been left unnamed for a reason.

I hope Legacy put an emergency Suicide switch on the OSMap so he can make the dream program I planned out. Then people would stop fighting over OSMap and make maps!

Seriously, there is too much aggression between supporters of OSMAP and people who don't. Just mind your own business and work on maps your own way. =\

The problem is OSMAP doesn't allow you to do things your way.

@Golden-Fist:

Sort of ironic don't you think "people will use OSMAP if they want, you can't force it upon them" but weirdly enough they have the right to force our maps from protection to unprotection lmfao.gif

Assuming 'your way' means you want to lock your maps to prevent other people from looking at them and/or editing them.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-29 at 00:58:45
"your way" is inclusive of anything a map maker may wish to do with their map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by chuiu on 2007-01-29 at 01:00:24
No its not because I do things my way then release the map and don't give a crap what else happens to it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2007-01-29 at 01:04:10
"you" is plural inclusive, and the statement implies that OSMAP actively stops every person (as in prevents a situation from occurring where every person...) from doing what they wish with their map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by chuiu on 2007-01-29 at 02:09:33
DTBK, stop implying that everyone cares about what other people do to their maps.

I think there's some underlying issues with both sides of the arguement that should be and hopefully can be addressed. Osmap isn't the source, just the focal point with these problems. Discussing osmap is the easiest way to bring these problems out. Things like... perserving the author's name. Is it really that god damn important to have your name on some map for a little game? Not really. Not in the grand scheme of things (or maybe it is?). But people like credit... and credit should always be issued where credit is due. I certainly would like to keep my name on a map I made. That's what the discussion topic is all about. Not entirely osmap, the issues behind it. Osmap is, in a way, irrelvant to the discussion about it, in my view. It exists, nothing more really can be said about it.

And that's where improving sen and mapmaking comes in.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Centreri on 2007-01-29 at 14:12:33
Of course OSMAP is the source.. anything that violates the wish of the map creator for some excuse as pathetic as 'to learnzzz' is the source.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by chuiu on 2007-01-29 at 15:15:25
Centreri, what IP means is that OSMAP isn't the first map unprotector nor is it the source of the debate, its simply the most recent and widely known map unprotection device.
