Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Considering a Random Defense...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Bulletbutter on 2007-02-01 at 17:46:42
I am in the process of working on a defense map that, so far, has 1554 units pre-placed. I fear that my original intentions for this map are gone forever. So as a the last alternative I have come to the conclusion that this map may only be viable if I use Random Units.

The basic idea of the map is that players will be able to Mind Control burrowed units and create a path for the enemy units to walk down. My original plans were to allow players to use any of the 40+ SC units (bring a civ to a location, if they have the $$ for it when they MC, the unit they selected will 'pop-up' where the burrowed unit was). However, after making a rough draft I had exceeded the unit limit.

So, I was wondering if there was a better way to allow players to make a path with units. Keep in mind the the units will not move and doing something that may force them to move is out of the question (such as building a turret and it gets replaced with a unit, I have tested that and there is like a 80% chance of units moving due to awkward building placement). Building small buildings, such as turrets and pylons, was my first idea. But it seemed to leave to much room for error (which is why I choose to stick with Mind Controlling units already pre-placed).

My second question has to do with balancing the map using random units (if I get stuck doing it). I must admit that I have no idea how to even begin doing it.

So, if you don't like reading, here is a re-cap of what I am asking...

1. Is there a better way to allow players to make a path with units. These units can't be moved!

2. How would I go about balancing a random unit defense?

-EDIT-
Also, do map revealers count towards the unit limit?

Well, they have to be able to place the units, so maybe, it freezes the units during the defence, and after it it unfreezes them. Oh, and map revealers DO count towards the limit.

Well I was thinking of something like basing the 'legal' unit placements on locations. I would just have to make each square of the terrain either checkerboard or all different. And put a location over every tile. I could do something like a dropship system where there is always 1 'civ' (just an example) in the drop ship. When the player brings the civ to any location, it is replaced with a unit they choose.

The only problem I can forsee with that is I am not sure if there is a limit on the number of locations a map can have.

255 is the limit

Also, using the system you were talking about, you could have a big location that only detects ground covering the area they can build in, and if they bring a civilian there then you center a location on the civilian, make sure there are no units where the civilian was dropped, then order the civilian back into the dropship and create a unit where the civ was.

What about a location over everywhere that you are going to place burrowed units, then create 2500 lings at that location when map starts, and then tell them to burrow. Think it will work?

Well, to my knowledge it will not work. If I am not mistaken locations can only hold a certain amount of units (if you create them with triggers). So placing 2500 lings with triggers would give the unit un-placeable error.

Don't quote me on that though, I am gonna try it out now.

-EDIT-
Ok the above statment is only true for units that are not burrowed. I tried it with burrowed lings and it worked but it stacked them all in 1 spot which wouldn't work.
And even placing them, then telling them to burrow puts them to close together. When I tried other units it would only place about 40 or so.

you cant create 2500 lings because 1700 is the limit.
