Just wondering cause I'm currently making the spell system for my game and wondered what most people prefer, I myself like the Dropship method smile.gif .

dropship for obvious reasons.

quicker, more variation, quite an easy trigger system, etc...

I like the dropship[ because you can use hotkeys so you can be watching a battle and then just press a button to activate a spell.

That is if people KNOW how to use hotkeys. There's a surprising number of people who still don't know how to do it.

The best way for most people would be the conventional method (option 3). This way is the most familiar.

I personally prefer the dropship because you don't have to divert attention from the battle.

dropship but only if its easy.

If you have a hero duran and a hero stkov and i actully have to read to find out which one is which. It's just annoying. the Civ on beacon is bad because it takes too much time

no matter what method u use u still have to read the unit names if it is duran or stucov.

lol so far Dropships are winning with a full sweep biggrin.gif

I like the drop ship system because theres about no limitations to how many spells you can put.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-08-19 at 09:01:22
Hum...... Thre a limit: the 8 place in the dropship. (but if you mean something else tell me)

Yea maybe 8 units but like this 6 units = spells 2 units = something else 6 x 6 like 36 spells meh just a guess off top my head.

Or using Dropship like a menu (thx to bolt_head for is "place a Crystal" maps)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by phatdiddy on 2004-08-19 at 09:54:16
Well if you use make the dropship more of a text based menu then just drop the unit to cast a spell you can have alot of possiblities depending on how many strings you want to use.

And you just need a few units called like Option 1, Option 2, etc. and a back button. That way you have a text menu appear when it is dropped allowing for different things to happen if you drop again. I have a map like this with just the dropship thing if you wanna see.

That's what he said. He's saying that you have to read the unit name if they're two hero ghosts because they both look the same in the dropship. What I like to do in that situation is give one of the units 1%.

That's probably the one people are least familiar with. Beacons are the most common.

Dropship is easier to use since you can battle and choose options at the same time instead of literally having to control the civilian and send it to a beacon without walking over a different one.

Would it be a good idea to add "Center view (your hero)" to the actions when a spell is cast? Ppl are probably gonna go watch there hero after they cast their spells anyway, or should i just make a unit in the dropship especially for that?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by mianmian on 2004-08-19 at 14:42:40
Hey i think dropship is very good idea but what happens is it may take up a lot of units if you want to name the spell for the person using it.

I like the predetermined a lot cause yhen you dont even need to use the hotkeys just click the spell. And when a you cast darkswarm and it turns into bug attacking monster ( ultalisk) its just so cool

I like a building system. Hotkey+keyboard is faster than moving your mouse to the correct unit in a Dropship, especially when you might click the wrong one or they change positions.

In this map, which I posted in the Weapon Systems concept thread, the units in your dropship never change positions. Check it out. First I remove all of the units in the ship and under the ship, and then I create them one at a time and put them back in. It's nearly instantaneous, too. It just depends on the order in which you put them in.

That map has some awesome trigger work, BTW. If you're a fan of complex trigger systems check it out.

Best Idea Evar.

The only faults I see is the fact that you need to figure a way to tell the player what units do what and the fact that it requires a quite a bit of space.

Dropship method wastes units... use it if your map can spare some units.

They usually won't change position, even if you just reload the one dropped and leave the rest in there.

I'm almost positive there is a predetermined order to loading them, to an extent. I mean the largest units are always on the left and smallest on the right. I have a map where I was working with this and I think I reloaded them just the 1 that was dropped and they always went back to their old spot.

Dropships please. smile.gif

Dropships is the most common, easiest, and it costs less triggers. (but more strings)

I would prefer the Dropship method.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by phatdiddy on 2004-08-20 at 09:52:07
Dropships definetly not the most common, and if you use a menu method it takes a load of strings and switches and usually a decent amount of triggers.

It all depends on how you do it.
