Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Mulitiple Terrain Types On One Map?

I was watching my friend play WC3 and he joined a game that used like 3 different terrain types. It would be censored.gif ing awesome if you could do it in SC but so far ive herd no mention of it. Is this a possibility for staredit or is there some reason why no ones figured out a way to do it?

It isnt possible to do the only thing u can do is place different terrain doodads or sprites on a different terrain type

But why isnt it possable?

im not 100 percent sure i think its just the way blizzard made it and i think previous attempts made starcraft crash or it might just simply be the fact that no 1 has made a editor with that ability thats just my guess

Last i checked it was impossable to do it with wc3s normal editor but there are 3rd party editors that let you do it. Why would they make it so you cant it sc but then leave it in wc3?

It isn't impossible with the normal editor, you just go to Terrain, choose Custom Terrain and choose which pieces you use...(FOR WC3) Simple!

Starcraft, it isn't possible due to the style of data storage, which stops you viewing more than one style of terrain type at one time. Can't get around it. Simple form, it is HARDCODED into Starcraft.

Its impossible to do with staredit because in each different terrain set the tiles are numbered/id'ed the same as all the other ones.. for example

BADLANDS

Dirt = 1

INSTALLATION

Substructure = 1

Each have the same ID, so it simply cannot work. To place things in a .scx you put it down as a ID number. Since you would put down 1 to get dirt and substructure, it depends on the terrain set (badlands, ice, installation) etc.

The only way to do it would be some sort of patch (DEATHKNIGHT HINT HINT) that messes around with the ID numbers.

Bolt told me about this ID stuff, so go ask him for more information.

So it isnt possible without altering starcraft itself?

... censored.gif ... now i have The Boy Who Destroyed The World stuck in my head...

Yup.

Warcraft III isn't Starcraft so don't compare the games that way.

The only way I could think of doing it, which wouldn't work is telling SC that "This Section will use tile information for set Twilight"
And "This section will use tile information for set Desert"

And that would probably censored.gif lotsa things up way too severly.

And probably also corrupt the map and make it unplayable

Probably not.

I'd think if you tried to play the map you would get the little message in the map description that says: "This map is unplayable as it has been corrupted"

Ok, so it has ID numbers, which are not, i think easy to access at the moment, though you can replace certain ID's for groups in the StarDat.mpq, so you could have a mix, you would just need to get the terrain brush squares and place them in an existing data slot to replace them. Would require a Mod.exe to play them, and crash if anyone not usng tried it.

Thats not something anyone would be interested in modding. Most mods just change a value here and there such as for unit speeds or hitpoints. And then of course they swap image sprites in and out. A mod of this nature would require compleatly changeing the way SC reads maps. Your better of designing your own starcraft, cause it isn't going to happen.
