Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> Insanity: Redux
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2004-09-10 at 03:16:56
Originally, a friend of mine (Euryale) and her friend (JokersSpectre) started a map entitled Insanity Reload. Euryale quit StarCraft and JokersSpectre disappeared as far as I know, both while the map is unfinished. Thus, I decided to finish it for them (I got Euryale's permission to do so).

It kinda goes like this:
A ship crashlands on a strange planet (oh how cliché). Before this happens, players choose their units as one of the 4 ghosts. When the players exit the ship, they start to feel strange and gain "Insanity Points" every few seconds - on the contrary, they don't gain any while inside said ship. They also gain "Insanity Points" when coming in contact with enemy units.

At certain amounts of "Insanity," the players begin to feel the effects of it, i.e.:
- They become narcolptic (vision turns off then on in certain intervals).
- They become immobile units.
- They hear voices saying they are under attack.
- They encounter hallucinated units constantly attacking them.
- They run into random directions.
- They attack their own teammates.
- They have blurred vision (massive amount of observers overhead).
- They become paranoid (running from enemies).
- They misplace money.
- They see their own deaths.
- They become paralyzed (shoot but can't attack).
And so on...

There are also parts of the ship they need to find in order to use the healing bay, communication center, upgrade facilities, etc.

In the end there will be a final boss who controls the "Insanity" on the planet. It wont be a 1 unit boss - like a Duran running around attacking you - but instead it will be comprised of a few special attacks and key buildings that need to be destroyed.

So what do you guys think? Any ideas for more "Insanities?" I think I'll need 19-20 total.

Aww damn, I figured he left all together like Eury. Should I even continue this then? I did do all the terrain from scratch so it looks completely different from the map they made. The only similarity is that it has the same concept

This sounds cool, but then, I'm the Self Appointed Lord of Insanity, so obviously I would like any insane but good map that deals with insanity.

Finish it, or I'll make you go insane.

Good ideas. Those are very good but might piss off newbs.

i liek the Under Attack voice idea, paralasis, and vision thing. I think they should be able to see very close to them, maybe a have a medic blind them,a dn have you unvisioned with yourself, but a comps map revealer you see will follow your unit, so vision can be controlled that way.

make a unit blind.

I think medics blind ghosts easily, just remove all their abilities excpet blind, and trap the gbhsots ans medic together, and make sure ghost has 81 HP or more, I think that'll work.

of course, I don't know if maybe you want the total blindness or the mostly blind.

Yeah, what I originally had in mind was just that the player's vision would turn off for 1 second then turn back on for 3 seconds and so forth.

I forgot to mention that you can reduce your Insanity points in a certain area of the ship, once you find the specific part that powers it.

sounds alot like Eternal Darkness for GameCube... good but VERY hard and scary game (especially when you play it at 3:00am with lights off and only the game on)

Haven't heard of or played that (I have a PS2...) but I'll look into it. The original map was started a few years ago, so I doubt it was taken from this game you speak of.

Might be hard if you shoot your allies though. You should have a warning like (w/e setting in, can't fight it or w/e), so they can try tro run from their temmates or form enenmy units or w/e.

Okay. Plus the shooting teammates thing is just unallying your teammates then allying again 2 seconds later. If the teammates are smart, they wont kill the player with this insanity level, but this may cause them to go ahead and kill the teammate who shot them. Thus, making them go insane without the help of any points to prove it. Oh the paranoia!!

"sounds alot like Eternal Darkness for GameCube"
That's exactly what I was thinking.
In Eternal Darkness, whenever you encounter an enemy, insanity goes up, and you cna have hallucinations, and if you build up enough insanity, you die I think, but whenever you kill an enemy, you lose points.

Not sure about the above, I only played it for about an hour, and it was last year.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2004-09-12 at 16:01:54
Hmm I've never played the original, might as well give it a try.

And about the "Eternal Darkness" game, I really have never played or heard of it so I assure you its merely coincedence. Most of those insanity levels were, however, thought up by Euryale so I assume she has heard of it. Then again, they do seem like pretty common affects of insanity and given that StarEdit doesn't have many other features to support any more insane things, it is reasonable that it was a coincedence.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by JokersSpecter on 2004-09-13 at 03:38:53
Well, well. This is really interesting... Imagine my surprise when Mog tells me that somebody is trying to continue my map.

Yes, this is Eric, original creator of Insanity... (Which was a really glitchy map. Somehow the glitches made it better, though...)

Anyway, to start, I did get the idea for Insanity from Eternal Darkness. I came up with the idea before the game came out when I saw a little diagram on how the players become insane from being near monsters. And yes, everyone should buy it. It's really creepy.

Euryale doesn't have any say on giving you permission. She abandoned the project before it was even halfway complete. And no, she didn't think up the Insanity symptoms. I did.

I'd like to say that I've been working on IR (Insanity Reload) myself, but I haven't been lately because my computer was reformatted. I have a backup file of the map, but I haven't got around to working on it.

If you really want to continue the map, I'd prefer it if we teamed up and worked on it together, because I've put way too much time into IR to not finish it myself. There's not much you could do, however... I only have a bunch of triggers to do. As of right now, I think it's about 90% complete. It's my job to finish it.

Go ahead and send me an e-mail or add me to MSN (JokersSpecter@hotmail.com) so we can talk more about this. Sorry that you've gone through the trouble of working on another version.

By the way...what's your B.net name? I don't remember a "DevliN"... (Then again, I've been without Brood War for a long time now...I need to burn a copy from my friend...)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2004-09-13 at 22:55:25
Ah okay, yeah I had asked her if I could work on it because I remember she was always doing most of the trigger work (or so it seemed) but then stopped completely. Man I feel like an idiot now, after she quit and I moved to East (note: its been over a year and a half since Eury left and I moved to East) I thought it was a great map and an even better idea going to waste if it wasn't completed. I'm sorry, I had no idea you were continuing it. And incase this were to happen I made a completely different terrain so I dodn't copy anything of yours except the symptoms and idea itself.

My name at the time was ][)S-DevlinD, I tested Eury's maps for her all the time. Now I'm on US East as Oo.DevliN.oO.

If you do need any help, a collaboration would be cool. And I didn't do much actual work on I:Redux, its all just plans on many MANY pieces of paper so its not much of a waste if I just stop working on it.

Edit:
Interesting things just keep on occurring:
Euryale now says that she did all the triggers and you only did the terrain and 5% of everything else. She also states that she wants to finish my version with me. With this in mind, would it be possible if we release my version as the 3rd installment and give you credit as creator and inspiration? She calls IR her baby and really wants to finish it so I figure this would be the main way...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by JokersSpecter on 2004-09-13 at 23:56:53
Her baby...? She quit working on it, how can she call it her baby? I had to completely redo her triggers because they interfered with everything else! Insanity was my map, and so was Insanity Reload. No, I didn't do only 5 percent of everything else. I ended up doing nearly ALL of it because her triggers were screwed up. You can ask anybody who helped me test it, or anybody who was there when she abandoned the map.

I'll tell you what. You can make Insanity: Redux if you only release it on US East. Insanity Reload is for US West. Also, you have to give me credit for the idea.

Tell Eury the only part of her work that actually worked was the puzzles right before the boss. Even those had a few glitches, however.

And at the time that she was "doing most of the trigger work", that was because she insisted on it. That was a mistake on my part, though. Take a suggestion from me and don't let her help you, unless you can understand her triggers.

It may sound like I hate Eury...but I'm just pissed that she's trying to take credit for something that's mine. Her baby? Yeah, right.

Tell Eury I said hi.

Don't mean to sound rude or anything...
But Euryale is a guy.

Yea, apparently he said he was a girl on D1 to get free items, and then it carried onto SC.

That is all.

(And we still play SC once in a while.)

Yea, I saw his beta version of IR, and it was barely started and didn't even work right.

You should really stop RawR'ing.
