Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> New Style of RPG
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2004-09-14 at 18:39:23
My idea isn't exactly new with game makers, since after all I did get the idea from the game Savage: Battle for Newerth (yeah, Newerth, not NeweArth). In this game, you can either be the Hero or the Commander, which is pretty cool, since (from the RPG side) the cities actually evolve based on another player, and (from the RTS side) you have real intelligient people fighting for you instead of little AI's you set on Patrol and send off to their deaths. What's even more innovative is that the Commander can "Resign" at any time and let someone else take over, leaving the Peasants to continue working (harvesting) and adding to the stockpile.
Well, to tell the truth, I did have a similar idea when I wanted to make a second Majesty RPG (only started on first one, never finished): have a human Commander, and human Heroes to serve said Commander. The problem with this is, if you ever played "Majesty: the Fantasy Kingdom Sim", there aren't nearly enough Heroes to serve the King!
I suppose my idea for a map isn't COMPLETELY new then: Dark World RPG (or World of Darkness RPG, same map, different names) had a human slot for a Commander. THAT map was made years ago, and still played on B.net today!

So what IS different? Many things DW RPG didn't have:

-the ability to switch between Commander and Hero
-the ability to enter buildings the Commander built, not existing buildings
-a more Open style
-POSSIBLY 2 players can be Commander at same time and go against each other
-items, spells, all other stuff a real RPG should have

Anyone want to help? Reply via PM, preferably if you have quite a bit of experience in trigger writing and general RPG mapping.

Liked the idea. What the hell does DW mean? Dark World? Death Wolf? Dark Wolf? Deadly World? What does it stand for?

I thought most ppl knew that, oh well who cares.

One thing, do the commanders and hereos have HP, because people could switch between them to get HP back, that's what I hate about SC, you can't measure the HP, and give it to another unit without very screwy triggers an using lings and splash damagage and crap no1 wants to do.

Cool idea though.

DW stood for Dark World... I thought it was obvious lol?

Here's how the switching works (you kinda have to read both things at the same time since they depend on each other to make sense tongue.gif):

Commander to Hero:
Bring your Hero to the Command Beacon
-->Your Hero will now be able to exit the Command Center
-->All your Buildings and Men except your Hero will be given to a computer player

Hero to Commander:
(Another human player cannot be commanding)
Bring your Hero to the Command Center
Bring your Hero to the Command Beacon
-->Your Hero will now be able to use only the Command Beacon
-->All Buildings and Men commanded by computer now given to you

Resources will be figured out later

So you're making your own Dark World RPG even though there's already a map called Dark World RPG?

You people are idiots.
Okay, he's making a map in which you are either a Hero or Commander.
This is an unpopular idea, but similar to the one uswed in DW which Dark World, which became amazingly popular, still to my fascination and surprise.
He is not making Dark World over again, he is simply making a map that uses the Town/Hero system.
If ytou haven't played it, then Merchants Rpg 3 Empires would probably be a good example, except against computer.
I think.

Lol, EzDay... well said, dude, well said.

However, since illiteracy isn't a crime, I'll just make the following (unofficial) statement: My RPG will be codenamed Nomads RPG. Nomad, as in the basic selectable Hero from Savage: Battle for Newerth (see first post if you have no idea wtf I'm talking about and/or were too lazy to read every post).

Let this also be a lesson to all you RPG-mapping-expert-wannabes: please DON'T put so much effort mindlessly in thinking up of some "rich" plot with a complicated, 10-letter-word name for your map. Let me tell you the godforsaken truth: NOBODY CARES!

Dark World RPG wasn't popular because of the storyline (kill Oblivion... yeah, bet most of you didn't even know), but because of the slot allowing a human companion to help the lone Heroes with Medics, Science Vessels, and whatnots... not to mention the Zombie Hero's extremely unbalanced Always-Set-Shield-to-100% trigger biggrin.gif .

Anywho, I'm pretty busy with school starting right now, not because of homework ('cause I'm oh-so-too-smart, 'course), but after school activities, soccer and band, which would consume some weekends as well.

Ergo, this topic was not named "new map", but instead "new style". Will I ever actually make this map? I don't know. I'm the brainstormer, and you guys -- fellow mappers of SEN -- are the rest of the brain (and the index finger on a mouse). Here's a cool, new, attractive, and dare I say, innovative idea. I'm not one such a person who wants to bring all his ideas to the grave (hopefully not for a while since I'm just 14), and SEN is a good community to share this single idea.

Speaking of sharing ideas, I feel we should stop the war in Iraq, put the funds into curing world diseases, bring world peace to Earth, and develop more things in space travel so we can do like the Zergs and conquer the universe! ... but let us leave that for another day, another topic, another forum section.

Just for the record, my first experience in mapping was adding a Respawn function to Dark World RPG, probably 2 years ago. It worked after... uh, several tries, which just goes to show that we all begin as newbs tongue.gif.

Change of plans... I've decided to actually do this map w00t.gif ! Anyone who wish to help with Nomads RPG... PM me, but TELL ME WHAT YOU CAN DO. I'm looking for people who can compensate what I like (mostly storyline ideas) or someone who just likes trigger making (as in, I create all the triggers for P1, then you modify them accordingly for all other human players).

Therefore I'll start a new topic as soon as I get the terrain done... this one's closed.
