Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> new program - Starweb
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SoftWarewolf on 2004-09-21 at 09:07:23
hello SEN!
i want to inform everyone here about one of my projects.
this is a program i call Starweb
it works basically as a website, its main purpose is to download maps etc more efficient
you click a name on the list then you instantly get a picture and description,
then you can download the map directly to your starcraft folder
(f.ex if you download this map: circulation defence, it will be put under starcraft\maps\defence\)
the program downloads updated listfiles etc at startup and checks for new version.
if there is a new version of starweb it will automatically download and run the install program.
for the moment you may drool to this screenshot tongue.gif

edit: seem to be a glitch on the jpg.. maybe il fix later

now heres what i need from YOU
as you can see i have barely added anything
so i want everyone to send in your best maps!
note that i have a very high quality standard, and all submission must have a picture, preferly in 155x155
so send your maps and minimap shots to softwarewolf@gmail.com
if you want to make life allot easier for me or if you have a large map i would like you to upload on your own serverspace and send me the URL's

please reply to this thread with any constructive comments or good advice smile.gif
perhaps this all was an awful idea and none will care to use it, what do you think?

I was thinking about it but is there some kind of database that handles all of this?

il tell you but don't laugh wink.gif
it uses .ini files to store the information and download them at startup

Seems cool to me. However, what happens if the maps get moved or deleted? Is there someone that automatically removes the map from the ini file if it cannot be found?

if the file is stored on another webspace somewhere and the file changes then naturally it wont work as it cant guess the new address, so i just have to change it manually

That will be difficult when you get large amount of files, and if people store them and it changes, well it can get awkward!

Why not have a little program running that does that for you, rather than a lovely little *.ini file...

perhaps its a missunderstanding here?
a program that does what? tries new random addresses until it works? tongue.gif
like the .jpg up here, if i f.ex change its name on my server to screenie.jpg then it wont appear on this forum because its the wrong address. thats the way it would be on my program also. i don't understand the issue
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-09-21 at 15:49:50
The thing I don't understand, is that is this a site where you download things, or a program that takes the maps you download into a neat little program?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-09-21 at 17:39:10
I think you download the program, and use it to download maps, and it catagories them for you.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by EzDay281 on 2004-09-21 at 19:01:44
I think Coko's right.

You might wanna shrink the screenshot, it stretches people's screens so any long posts can only be read if you use horizontal scroll bar which many people find annoying, such as me.

Also, this program sounds cool, not really any comments yet, when will it be ready/where can we get it?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lo[S]eR on 2004-09-21 at 19:22:15
It's a good idea but I dont see how you're gonna get every map..

Is it just me or does *link removed* have hacks on it? oO
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Gowr on 2004-09-21 at 19:41:16
This is cool! A Database of maps... LOL What if everyone sends in the maps on the SEN Database? Might cause a huge pileup for SWW.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-09-21 at 19:44:31
I'd love to support your program SoftWarewolf.

However, if you're site contains hacks, I can't link back to it.

Yeh he has hacks on his site
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SoftWarewolf on 2004-09-22 at 04:17:42
yeh thats exactly what it does coco, couldnt have said it better myself biggrin.gif.
Lo[S]eR had a good point tough, i still havent recived a single map :\
send good maps to SoftWarewolf@gmail.com now!
also with screenshots and as URL from your own server if possible.

as for hacks i dont have anything against them.
but i can hold it hackfree if it will help the program getting knows trough SEN smile.gif

I'd be more supportive of your website and your program if you did so.

Wait, now im confused again. I thought this was a map download manager? Not an actual website?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Moogle on 2004-09-22 at 08:08:20
Sounds good and all, but only site i send maps to is this one =/ sorry SWW. Site download database looks like good design.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SoftWarewolf on 2004-09-22 at 08:20:55
its not a website but it has news and downloads so it practically works like one

i didn't catch your point moogle but i will be adding some maps even if they are not submitted by the person who made them
(you cant complain as allot of the maps on SEN are not submitted by their creator either)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TEC_Ghost on 2004-09-22 at 10:41:24
So basically this is like the SEN download database except it downloads stuff in organized folders, which I could do in like 5 seonds without this program? Or am I missing something? confused.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-09-22 at 12:11:39
No thats basically it, except maybe you can just open this little program and get the files through seaching that way, rather than bringing up the webpage and all that.

Shadowflare has a similar program for all his Tools at her website, from ages ago. But then again she is a genuis!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SoftWarewolf on 2004-09-22 at 14:39:34
you will definitely save allot more than 5 seconds by using this program
i tested browsing trough the map sections on this site, i have 2mbs and it takes about 3 seconds to load a new page.
and unless you got the browser fixed on downloading directly to maps\ you definitely use allot of seconds either browsing to the maps folder before download or to open your download and sc folder and move it over after, than to just click and download instantly
i might also include auto unzip, autorun program install files. and maybe a new version checker
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-09-22 at 17:36:31
Although it could be useful, i'd rather have something that i can customize on how it catagories my maps and information.
