Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Ways To Control TWO Units?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Drakiel on 2004-09-28 at 15:33:17
I'm creating a map where it is required to constantly move both a marine and a dropship. CONSTANTLY.
Is there an easier way to control both seperately?
Namely... something other than clicking?

ARROW KEYS!!!
Dream on, I know... but any other input/ideas?

are the dropship and marine moving together or apart from each other? also try to hotkey : click on the units and while its selected press CTRL+ #'s 1-0. after that when u click on 1 itll bring up the unit u did it for, this works for groups of units also.

Other than clicking.. no not possible, what I was thinking has to involve some clicking, here is what I was thinking:

You could have a civ in a closed off area with 4 beacons, 1 left, 1 right, 1 top, & 1 bottom.. that could work as a arrow key system making it so that if the player's civ goes to the top beacon both the rine and the dropship will move up to a certain location.. i'm not sure if that helps, but wurth a shot.

Hotkeys and waypoints. Either that or load up the dropship with some unload-commands.

Well, that's a START for ideas...
But that would actually involve MORE clicking/hotkeying for the player, causing more hassel than just moving two units around. (Which SOUNDS easy, but when tested, it's not).

I know how to hotkey.
And the units are moving apart from eachother, but on the same screen.
See how that can be annoying?
Like doing "double bound" with two lings. (controling two units concept, that is)
Only.... it'll be a sniper map...

You could either try the 4-option bunker system, the 8 option dropship system, or the 6-option building system.

i got a solution! simple. have a spell casting system, like a shuttl eor something that you can hotkey, then have 3 units in it. have the option
unit 1 is unloaded, makes the dropship follow the marine.
unit 2 is unloaded, makes the marine follow the dropship.
unit 3 is unloaded, makes it all manual.

hope this helps!

How about this... You have control of your marine, and your dropship is told to order move to a location that is always centering your marine. That way you can just control your marine, and whenever you need to refer to the dropship, simply press the hotkey you gave it, and click something to unload, then switch back to your marine by pressing the hotkey.

Me:
-A good idea for a dif kind of map, ETEFT, very nice for certain things, but would complicated things for gamers in this game.
-I'm actually not familiar with either of those systems, Deathknight, save the obvious dropship, 8 dif units, 8 dif directions.
-That's a good idea Illusions, I like it thus far. Dunno if I will, but maybe I'll use it in the future!
-Ahh I see what you're saying killer. Yours is basic, but yea, I can advance it....

THANKS for your input guys! I'll keep asking around.
Post more please if you have any others!
Again, thank you.

My Unique System:

Give the player a Hive with buildings that allow them to make units. Always move the larva to the player's hero's location. Make it so a drone, overlord, etc. corresponds with a spell or ability. Easy to see where your spell unit is, but it could use some explaining...

What do you mean by controling them both? Are you saying that the marine is always below the dropship or some spacal relation like that? Or whenever the marine is moved up and to the left the drop ship moves that direction to?

Because its two differant things and you can control both units at the same time by selecting them both but most likely your not refering to that.

*sighs*
Okay, I REALLY didn't want to say this, because I don't want my idea stolen.
But I'm making a sniper map. Dropship is where you fire, marine is just your unit you keep alive. Yes, they must stay in range of eachother.
It would just get annoying, moving the marine TRYING to dodge, while at the same time shooting other players (get on top of them) with the dropship.

it would be FUN (this isn't possible) to move the marine with the keyboard and the dropship with the mouse, like in 1st person shooter games.

K, any other suggestions? So far I KINDA like "The dropship helps control the marine" Idea... sorta.... Lemmie know!

Well thats kinda difficult. Since you proboly don't ONLY want to fire forward or some other direction you need to move them indipendantly from eachother. Yet I see why you don't want to select back and forth.

There are only two options the way i see it. The first is to kinda make a distance follower trigger that makes the marine follow the drop ship but at a distance. So you move the drop ship everywhere and the marine just follows.

The other option (better in my opinion) would be to make movement commands in addition to the shot function of the drop ship. Like "MOVE RIGHT, MOVE LEFT, MOVE DOWN, MOVE UP". Then when you drop one of those units the marine starts moveing in that direction.

If you need help with triggers on how to do that tell me and i would be glad to help.
