Do you have any special setup when making maps? Post a screenshot biggrin.gif

I'll start us off. I dont use anything hyper (like always on top programs), however I do have Winamp up in minibar mod so I can listen to music while map making.

I use the tree for unit/building placement, the toolbox for terrain placement.

The only other program I have onpen while mapping is my music.

I tend to try and perfect my terrain before I place any locations.
After the locations I put the triggers.

I never ever make locations and triggers before unit placement.
I tend to use all my space before I add triggers.

I never use the toolbox.

Heh, I should get that minibar thing. Looks useful.

Actually I always have a split screen with notepad so I can see the To Do and info lists for the current map, such as the var table (vars = death counters, listed by catagory w/ descriptions of their purposes), what stuff I need to fix/change/test/add, special units (so I can remember which does what and to not have triggers that mess with things they arn't supposed to), and anything else useful. I sometimes keep my Dos trigger utilities (the ones I made, though they're basically glorified macro utilities) running in the background, but I have to save and reload the map evertime I use them (wish I could get them to work within staredit).

Otherwise I do things pretty standard, no extra frills or tricks involved.

Hmm nope, I usually just have SCXE open... If I wanna listen to music while mapping, I use my CD Player because I have a ton of CD's and playing them on my comp makes me lag a bit.

I like your idea with notepad Tuxedo, that really sounds like something I need to start doing, because I get confused at times.

I:
1- Play Winamp, since I like music
2- Have SC and my Bot open so I cantalk with my friends
3- Have Starforge open.
I never use the toolbox, and I tend to do things in a random order, kind of spontaneously.
But then, when I plan things, they usualy don't work right, so I prefer spontaneous.

I dont have a set way of doing thing every time i make a map. It just depends on what kind of map it is or how i feel at the time. My computer is... crap... so i cant really have any other programs open while im making a map/playing starcraft. All of my word processors crash when opened so none of that split screen with nopepad for me.
Making maps on this computer is a fragile process :F

But i do usually have the radio on for some music.

StarForge 2 open
scmdraft beta 2 open
SCXE open (sometimes)
about 3 pages of unit stats and names, map pictures, and list of what I'll do
the dinner my Mom put their but never noticed

When i do get around to making maps, I'll save them every minute and have t open them in another editor and I just switch between them. I look at my complex drawings which never seem to fit on the map sad.gif (terrain is too big, should be smaller but not realy small, like tile terrain except with isometrical terrain), and I just fill in all the stats, tweak them a lot, place the terrain, think it sucks, redo it, place units, think they suck, replace the units, get about half way through then not touch it for another four months.

Wow ZPD(mind if I call you that?), except for switching between editors that's usualy what happens to me when I try to make maps and I plan them out on paper.

i usually write down everything i have in mind down on a piece of paper and listen to music and work on my map biggrin.gif

I usually have StarCraft and WinAmp open. I like to minimize back and fourth between editing and SC, since I like to test every little thing.

The problem i have, is that i've got some Programmer Notepad programs open, and keep using them, and they make certain words highlighted and censored.gif like that! Gets on my nerves so much...

SCXE Base mode
-Terrain
-Basic Unit Placement
-Locations
SCFree Sounds
-Import Freesounds
SCXE Base mode
-Triggers
Starforge (Rarely)
-Place units for 9-255
-Special Terrain
StarEdit Network
-Updating map thread
-Asking for help
-Wasting time

I do not do the entire map terrain at once. When making an RPG, I do it in order of the quest, to make sure that it works. Terrain, Locations, Sounds, Triggers rinse and repeat. I also test the map A LOT. That way, if something is messed up, I have a chance to fix it before it messes me up too much. The last step of course, is PROEdit.

I love to use StarForge and SCMDraft 1 and 2 all at hte same time and send the map to each of them continually...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RexyRex on 2004-10-03 at 20:09:30
I start the terrain colors I want in SCMD2.
I place the terrain in SF.
I place a lot of locations in SCXE.
I go do some terrain fixing/editing (Never got it right the first time, never will).
I go do the rest of the locations, get started on triggers.
Test the map in it's basics.
Turn my computer off becuase of one bug I am too lasy to fix.

Personally, the only thing i use is winamp for listening to music. Other than that, all my triggers are VERY VERY orginized. Along with my locations. It's impossible to not find something quickly. Hell i name my death counters and everything. I don't need a single extra thing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-10-04 at 17:52:16
I do most of my triggers randomly.

Good idea with the do each quest separately. I should do that too. biggrin.gif

I always also have a lot of papers besides me that get all crinkled and scribbled over. I hate that my terrain never fits on the map. DOes size 512x512 work in SC? I know size 32 works, and 512 would be very awesome.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Paella on 2004-10-04 at 19:57:28
512 would be tooo large
totally unusable.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-10-04 at 20:25:56
I tested it

sizes 512 and 1024 don't work

Size 32 does.

It'd be cool if you could have bigger maps though.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SoftWarewolf on 2004-10-07 at 11:33:03
for map making:

Starforge 2 - terrain, placing, settings
x-tra 2.6 - triggers, strings

but i use whatever i need at the time.. like guedit, togi protector, trigger magic (pixels)

i like closing so i don't have way many programs on taskbar and so i don't confuse x-tra with SF and starts working on wrong version of map
but i usually have about 10 folders and 4 notepads open
